Como Signs Roberta Picchi to New Deal Amid Cancer Battle

Como have tied Roberta Picchi to a new long-term contract just as the veteran forward prepares to start treatment for breast cancer.

The club, set to make their debut in women's Serie A this season, confirmed that the 34-year-old has had her deal extended until the end of the 2027-28 campaign, describing the move as part of their “continued commitment” to the player.

This is not a routine renewal. Picchi is about to begin cancer treatment and will be followed closely by Como’s medical staff, who will work alongside the specialists leading her care. The club have made it clear she will not face that journey alone.

“Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead,” read a club statement. They also appealed for calm around the situation: “At this time, we ask that Roberta's privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery.”

Picchi heads into this fight on the back of one of the finest seasons of her career. She was part of the Como side that stormed to the Serie B title last term, finishing 11 points clear of Lumezzane to clinch the club’s first-ever promotion to the top tier of Italian women’s football.

Her response to the diagnosis carried the same competitive edge that has marked her rise with Como. “Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate,” she wrote on social media. “It's time to play my match, but I'll be back even more determined.”

Under head coach Selena Mazzantini, Como open their first Serie A campaign against AC Milan on 26 September. The season will begin without their forward on the pitch, but with her name firmly written into the club’s plans for the future – and her fight now the most important match of all.
