Coventry City Can Use Narrow Defeat as Launchpad for Premier League Season

Coventry defender Bobby Thomas insists the narrow defeat at Manchester City can be the launchpad for Coventry City's Premier League season, calling the 1-0 loss at Etihad Stadium “a great starting point” for Frank Lampard’s side.

Lampard’s newly promoted team arrived in Manchester without a point, beaten at Arsenal on the opening weekend and then at home by Hull City. This time, though, they stayed in the game, frustrated the champions for long spells and left with something more valuable than the league table suggests: belief.

“We approached the game differently and had a better gameplan,” Thomas told BBC CWR. “We executed it really well and were unfortunate not to come away with a point.”

The shift was obvious. Coventry altered their shape, tightened their lines and looked far more organised against one of the most ruthless attacking sides in Europe.

“You can see the formation change yourselves,” Thomas said. “We were more diligent in the roles everyone took on during the game. We approached it a lot better.”

The result still stings. Three games, three defeats, the Premier League table as unforgiving as ever. Thomas didn’t try to dress that up.

“Three games, zero points is not great,” he admitted, before snapping the focus back to what comes next. “But this was a great starting point. We can kick on and start getting some points from now.”

The fixture list has not been kind. Arsenal away. Manchester City away. Two of the toughest trips in the division, wrapped around a damaging home loss to Hull that sharpened the scrutiny around Lampard’s early weeks in charge.

Thomas, though, sees opportunity in the challenge.

“We've had Arsenal and Manchester City away, which has been a challenge, but we have to relish it and really take on these teams,” he said.

There was no hint of fear in his words. No suggestion Coventry intend to shrink on the big stages they fought so hard to reach.

“We can't come to any places and be timid and not give 100%,” Thomas said. “We have to be all-in on everything we are doing.

“We need to get after it and start getting some points now.”

The message is clear: the learning phase is over. The performances have improved. The excuses have run out. Now Coventry have to turn defiance into results.
