Crystal Palace Set for Historic Europa League Night

Crystal Palace are set for a European night they have waited their entire history to experience – and Pierre Sage might just have two of his main weapons back in time for it.

The Eagles host Polish champions Lech Poznan at Selhurst Park on Thursday in their first-ever UEFA Europa League fixture, a landmark occasion that arrives with a timely injection of good news in attack.

Sarr and Nketiah near Europa League return

Ismaila Sarr, last season’s top scorer, has yet to kick a ball competitively this campaign after injury stalled his momentum. Eddie Nketiah, who opened the season leading the line and started Palace’s first three matches, has missed recent home games.

Both could be back in the squad for this historic European opener.

Sage confirmed the pair rejoined full training earlier in the week and have impressed on their return, raising hopes they can feature against Lech Poznan.

“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said when asked specifically about Sarr.

For a Palace side stepping onto the continental stage for the first time, the prospect of restoring their primary goal threat and the striker who began the season as a starter is a significant lift. Sage has spoken of the work both have put in to regain fitness, and their sharpness in training has come at exactly the right moment.

Henderson out injured but signs new deal

Not all of the injury news is positive. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson remains sidelined, as does Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Sage targeting returns for both after the upcoming international break.

Yet just as Palace absorbed that setback, they were handed a major off-field boost. Shortly before Sage faced the media, the club announced that Henderson had signed a new long-term contract running until 2030, tying their captain to Selhurst Park for the prime years of his career.

Sage welcomed the deal and underlined the importance of Henderson’s presence around the club, not just between the posts.

“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” he said, highlighting the leadership and influence Henderson brings to the dressing room.
