Cuca Weighs Neymar's Availability for Palmeiras Match

Santos head coach Cuca is in no rush to roll the dice on Neymar as the club prepares for a daunting away trip to Palmeiras and their much-debated artificial pitch.

Speaking after Santos’ 2-1 Copa Sudamericana win over Macara, Cuca admitted he has not yet decided whether his star forward will feature and made it clear the call will be made only after fresh talks inside the dressing room.

“I don't have an answer to that yet, but tomorrow when we report back, we'll see how the whole squad is doing,” Cuca told ESPN Brazil. “I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and with the entire squad so we can decide what to do.”

The uncertainty comes with Santos heading into one of the most difficult fixtures on their calendar. Cuca did not try to dress it up.

“The match against Palmeiras is going to be very tough; they are a very good side, and it's impossible to deny they are the favourites,” he said. “But we'll work hard to do our best on Wednesday.”

Neymar vs synthetic turf

The real flashpoint sits under Neymar’s boots. The forward has long made his dislike of artificial grass public, and that aversion only hardened after he suffered an ankle sprain against Atletico Mineiro.

In the aftermath of that injury, he exploded on social media: “It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***.”

That frustration has not faded. Asked in the mixed zone about the looming clash with Palmeiras, Neymar sidestepped any firm commitment.

“Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday,” he replied. “I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf].”

His stance is consistent. Neymar has previously been blunt about the Allianz Parque surface and the impact he believes it has on players.

“Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible. Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries,” he said. “Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch.”

So Cuca now stands at a crossroads: push his star into a hostile environment he openly despises, or hold him back and face the favourites without his most decisive player. The answer will come from inside the Santos camp — and it will say plenty about how far they are willing to go in this title fight.
