Daniel Maldini went from match-winner to the centre of a dawn drama in the space of a few hours in Milan.

The Cagliari forward, who had calmly buried the decisive penalty in his side’s win over Atalanta in Bergamo on Saturday, September 12, was involved in a road accident at around 5:15 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Via Tolentino and Via Francesco Caracciolo.

From penalty spot to flashing blue lights

The streets were almost empty when the collision unfolded. Two cars were initially involved, before the chaos spilled over and a parked Mercedes SUV was also struck, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Emergency services moved quickly. Three ambulances and a medical car were dispatched to the scene, where six people were reported to have suffered minor injuries. Five of them were taken to hospital for further checks.

Maldini was transported to Fatebenefratelli Hospital as a precaution. The scare was real, the outcome a relief.

“After a brief checkup with a code blue at the emergency room, Daniel was immediately released and returned home. He is in good health,” his lawyer, Danilo Buongiorno, said. “Daniel is fine and has not suffered any injuries, let alone serious ones.”

Investigators reconstruct the crash

Police are now piecing together how the early-morning crash developed. Initial findings indicate that a vehicle travelling along Via Caracciolo collided with Maldini’s car as it emerged from Piazza Caneva.

According to those first reconstructions, the Cagliari striker’s vehicle did not yield the right of way. The impact reportedly came between the front left of Maldini’s car and the front right of the oncoming vehicle.

The force of that collision then sent the other car careening into the parked Mercedes SUV, which was in a residents’ parking bay.

The investigation continues, with authorities working through witness accounts and damage patterns to confirm the exact sequence of events.

For Maldini, the most important verdict has already arrived: he walked away unhurt. No fractures, no lingering injuries, only the shock of a night that swung violently from celebration to concern.

With medical checks completed and legal reassurance from his representatives, the 22-year-old can turn his attention back to Cagliari. Club officials are expected to welcome him back to training as preparations intensify for the next round of Serie A fixtures.
