Declan Rice: Arsenal's Iron Man Embracing Heavy Workload
Declan Rice refuses to slow down. Not for Arsenal. Not for England. Not for anyone.
As the debate rumbles on about fixture congestion and the toll on elite players, the Arsenal midfielder is moving in the opposite direction. While others call for fewer games, Rice is calmly talking about 60-plus appearances a season as if it is just part of the job description.
Last year underlined the strain on Arsenal’s core players. A full 38-game Premier League campaign, a run to the Champions League final, and a Carabao Cup final appearance dragged the squad past the 60-match mark. That schedule tests even the deepest squads. It exposes any weakness, any dip in conditioning, any lapse in mentality.
Rice barely flinched.
Arsenal’s ever-present
At Arsenal, some players rotate. Rice rarely does. He has become one of Mikel Arteta’s true non-negotiables, the kind of player you pencil into the team sheet before you even think about the system.
His importance has been such that he has pushed through pain to stay on the pitch, even taking injections to make sure he is available for key fixtures. When the calendar tightens and the games stack up, Rice is usually still there, patrolling midfield, closing space, dragging his team through difficult spells.
Then there is England. Tournament summers, qualifiers, friendlies. Every extra international date adds to the load, yet Rice continues to embrace it. No complaints. No calls for a breather. Just more minutes, more responsibility.
“I’ve shown that I can do it”
Speaking via Hayters, Rice set out his stance clearly. For him, this isn’t a new challenge. It is the norm.
"For the last six seasons, even since my West Ham days when it was in Europe, I've played 60-plus every season.
"So I think it is sustainable because I've shown that I can do it. It's just about maintaining it, maintaining the level and the consistency of the performances.
"For me, that's the main thing, showing up every week, giving a good account of myself and helping the team win. I've been lucky enough to be able to do that. So I'm really hungry to be able to do that again this season."
No caveats. No talk of limits. Just a demand for consistency and a hunger to repeat it.
Arsenal’s iron man for another brutal season
The numbers back him up. Season after season, Rice has shouldered a workload that would break many midfielders, all while keeping his standards high enough to remain central for both club and country.
Arsenal’s schedule will be unforgiving again. Another title push, another crack at Europe, domestic cups, international breaks cutting through whatever rest might be available. It will stretch the squad. It always does.
Rice is not asking for protection. He is asking for more. For Arsenal, that mentality might prove as valuable as any transfer they could make.
