Eli Junior Kroupi Shortlisted for 2026 Ballon d'Or Young Talent Award

Joe Partington says Eli Junior Kroupi has finally been given the recognition he deserves after the Bournemouth forward was shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or Men's Young Talent of the Year award.

Kroupi, just 20 and currently sidelined with a broken foot, struck 13 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions last season, driving Bournemouth’s attacking spark before injury halted his rise.

Speaking on BBC Radio Solent's Cherries Unpicked podcast, former Bournemouth defender Partington could barely hide his amazement.

"It is just mad, isn't it?" he said. "We've had some exceptionally talented young players at this football club, but never one who has been involved in the Golden Boy award at the Ballon d'Or."

For Partington, the nomination reflects both Kroupi’s impact and the void his absence has left.

"Eli Junior Kroupi did perform exceptionally well last season. Bournemouth really are missing him at the moment, there is a big hole in the team," he said. "They are missing him being a slight maverick, being a bit more creative and being able to take risks."

The contrast is clear. Without Kroupi, Bournemouth feel more restrained, less daring in the final third.

"Bournemouth feel a bit safe in their playing style at the moment," Partington added. "He is a bums-off-seats kind of player. When he gets the ball in and around the box, people expect him to beat the goalkeeper or hit the target."

For Partington, the Ballon d'Or nod underlines just how highly Kroupi is now regarded on the global stage.

"It is rightful recognition for him to be included in those top 10 best young players in the world," he said. "Will he win the award? I would say the likelihood is probably not, but it is great confirmation Bournemouth's recruitment team continue to hit the mark."

The next step is clear: recovery, then a return to the form that lit up last season.

"Hopefully he is able to overcome this foot injury now and recapture the form that put him in this position in the first place," Partington said – a hope shared by a club that looks a little too safe without its young maverick.
