Enzo Fernández's Future at Chelsea: Xabi Alonso's Stance

Xabi Alonso has stopped short of promising that Chelsea will resist if Manchester City come hard for Enzo Fernández.

The midfielder’s future is still hanging in the balance. Chelsea’s informal cut-off for written offers of £120m for the 25-year-old has come and gone, yet the possibility of him leaving Stamford Bridge remains very much alive.

City, reshaping their midfield after Rodri’s move to Barcelona, have locked on to Fernández as a prime target. Roma’s Manu Koné is also on their radar, but Fernández is central to their thinking as the window ticks towards its close and they weigh up whether to test Chelsea’s resolve.

Alonso keeps cards close to his chest

Chelsea know the ground is shifting. They have lined up Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as potential replacements, a clear admission that this saga could still twist again before deadline day.

Fernández has not hidden his desire to move on. Asked directly whether the World Cup winner would definitely remain his player beyond the window, Alonso refused to offer any guarantees.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “He’s a top player. He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team. Very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.”

No promise. No long-term assurance. Just the present tense.

Chelsea begin their Premier League season away to Fulham on Monday night and Fernández is expected to be involved. When Alonso was pressed again – this time on whether the £106.7m signing had told him he wanted to stay – he stepped around the issue once more.

“He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.”

The message is clear enough: right now, he’s committed. Beyond that, the door is not bolted.

Replacements lined up as market heats up

If Fernández goes, Chelsea will move. They have already made one approach for Scott, only to be rebuffed. Bournemouth have made it plain they intend to keep the 22-year-old this summer and will resist a sale.

Wharton sits as the alternative on Chelsea’s list. City, though, have already seen a bid for the England midfielder turned down by Palace, underlining how fierce the competition – and the pricing – has become in this window.

Alonso’s challenge is not only about arrivals. He also wants to cut numbers before the deadline.

Up front, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have slipped down the pecking order and are expected to move on. Delap has no shortage of admirers: Everton, Leeds, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest are all monitoring his situation.

Chelsea also retain interest in Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto as they look to refine the squad profile, while Palace are pushing to strengthen their back line with a loan move for Axel Disasi.

Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with the season about to ignite, a marquee midfielder in the shop window and Europe’s champions circling. The opening whistle is coming. The real question is whether Enzo Fernández is still wearing blue when it sounds for the final time on deadline day.
