Lille Begins New Era Under Davide Ancelotti Against Angers

Lille’s new era under Davide Ancelotti begins on Sunday lunchtime, with a tricky opener at Angers setting the tone for a season loaded with expectation.

The stage is Stade Raymond Kopa. The backdrop: a home side desperate to stop living on the edge, and visitors who now speak openly about trophies.

Angers chasing more than survival

This is Angers’ third straight year in Ligue 1. For the last two, the story has been the same: survival, nothing more. Thirty-six points. Bottom half. Twice.

The club wants that to change. Stephane Gilli has been handed the job of dragging them out of that cycle and proving he belongs at this level after his February dismissal from Paris FC. It is a bold appointment, and a risky one.

He will lean heavily on a revamped dressing room. The summer business has focused on experience and opportunity, with several arrivals on free transfers or loans. Anthony Lopes and Branco van den Boomen headline the free-agent intake, while Usman Simbokoli arrives from RWDM Brussels as the standout signing. Amine El Ouazzani joins on loan from Braga to sharpen an attack that has too often gone quiet when it matters.

Angers badly need a change in rhythm. They are winless in their last nine Ligue 1 matches and have managed just one domestic away victory all year. History does not offer much comfort either: they have failed to score in each of their last two opening Ligue 1 away games since last winning one in 2021.

Gilli also has fitness concerns. Louis Mouton is a doubt for matchday one due to a meniscus problem that has troubled him for months, thinning options in the middle of the park.

Even so, the likely XI suggests intent rather than fear. Lopes is expected to start in goal behind a back four of Carlens Arcus, Ibrahima Camara, Jordan Lefort and Faustin Ekomie. Van den Boomen should slot into midfield alongside Himad Abdelli Belkhdim, with a creative line of Zineddine Sbai, Lilian Bermont and Jim Allevinah supporting El Ouazzani up front.

Angers want to talk about ambition. Lille will test how serious they are.

Ancelotti steps into big shoes

On the other side, Lille arrive with momentum and pressure in equal measure.

After a strong 2025-26 campaign, they finished in the top three for the second time this decade and now expect to stay among the elite. Davide Ancelotti inherits that platform and the weight that comes with it. The son of Carlo Ancelotti walks into a job Bruno Genesio left on a high, after back-to-back seasons of 60+ points before his move to Marseille.

Pre-season suggests Lille are ready to hit the ground running. They lost just once in four friendlies and scored 11 goals in the process, hinting at a side that has kept its attacking edge while tightening up the details.

The numbers away from home are even more impressive. Lille ended last season as one of Ligue 1’s best travellers, going unbeaten in their final seven away league games. Across that run they conceded only two goals. On Sunday they can extend their streak to four straight away league matches without letting one in.

Their dominance over Angers has been brutal recently. Les Dogues have won the last four top-flight meetings without conceding, and can stretch that run to five this weekend.

There are problems, of course. Hamza Igamane remains sidelined as he recovers from a cruciate ligament tear, removing one attacking option from Ancelotti’s plans. But the spotlight will fall elsewhere anyway.

Olivier Giroud is set to begin what he has already called likely his final season as a professional, with the World Cup winner turning 40 in September. His presence alone shifts the mood of a dressing room and a stadium. Every appearance now feels like the start of a farewell tour.

Lille’s probable lineup underlines their balance. Berke Özer should start in goal, shielded by a back four of Tiago Santos, Ayyoub Ngoy, Alexsandro and Romain Perraud. Benjamin André and Ayyoub Bouaddi are expected to anchor midfield, allowing the trio of Mukau, Hákon Haraldsson and Correia to supply Fernandez-Pardo in attack.

This is not a team searching for an identity. It already has one. Ancelotti’s task is to sharpen it, not reinvent it.

Prediction

Angers have experience and a new voice on the touchline. What they lack is proven quality against a side as complete as Lille.

With Lille’s defensive solidity, attacking depth and continuity from last season, the visitors look a level above.

Prediction: Angers 0–2 Lille.
