Real Madrid's Midfield Evolution: Mourinho's Vision for Arda Guler

Real Madrid are into the final stretch of their pre-season work, and the new campaign is already looming large. On Saturday, Espanyol arrive at the Bernabeu, and with them comes the first real judgment on Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge.

It has been a busy, largely coherent summer. Real Madrid have plugged obvious gaps with the arrivals of Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Yan Diomande, adding legs, energy and depth to a squad that needed all three. The rebuild has a clear shape.

One problem remains unsolved.

The club have not landed the midfield controller they chased for weeks. Enzo Fernandez slipped away. Rodri too. With the market closing in and no marquee pivot in sight, Mourinho is already turning his gaze inward.

The name at the top of his list: Arda Guler.

Speaking to El Chiringuito, as reported by Diario AS, Mourinho outlined a long-term vision for the Türkiye international that stretches well beyond his current role as a creative No.10.

"I love Güler. I think something similar is going to happen to Modric or Bernardo Silva. You start in one position and end up in another, you start as a 10 and you will finish as an 8 or 6. I think Arda will go in that direction with his evolution and knowledge of the game."

It is a revealing comparison. Luka Modric, who arrived in Madrid as a playmaker, grew into the heartbeat of a midfield that defined an era. Bernardo Silva, once a wide schemer, became one of Europe’s most complete interior midfielders. Mourinho clearly believes Guler can follow a similar path, dropping deeper as his understanding and influence grow.

That does not mean an immediate positional shift. Not yet.

For now, the deeper role is being sketched out for Bernardo Silva, the marquee name brought in to knit this new-look side together. Mourinho has been effusive about his Portuguese compatriot, adamant that Silva offers far more than a symbolic signing or a blow aimed at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

In Mourinho’s plan, Silva is the one who “brings everything” to the middle of the pitch right away. Guler is the project, the evolution piece, the player who might one day anchor the team from deeper territory.

Madrid’s season starts on Saturday. The search for their next great midfield reference point may already be underway inside their own dressing room.
