Arteta Explains Arsenal's Move for Konsa Amid Defensive Crisis
Mikel Arteta did not name Ezri Konsa. He did not need to.
With William Saliba facing a long spell out and Jurrien Timber still missing, Arsenal’s manager laid bare exactly why the club has moved decisively for the Aston Villa defender, whose £51million switch – plus add-ons – is on the brink of being confirmed.
Konsa spent Thursday at Arsenal’s training ground undergoing a medical after the clubs thrashed out a fee for the 28-year-old. The timing is tight. He is not expected to feature in the Premier League opener against Coventry, but all eyes are already on Villa Park a week later, where his debut could come against the club he is leaving behind.
Arteta’s message: we had no choice
Arteta has been hinting for days that Arsenal would act. On Thursday, he dropped the pretence and spelled out the scale of the problem in his back line.
“We are really active in the market, I mentioned that a few days ago,” he said in his press conference. “The ambition is to improve the squad. Obviously we have a really specific issue in the back line, especially with the long-term injury with Willy and the fact that we miss one more defender.
“That’s clear so we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we’re ready, we’ll announce something.
“We are willing to improve that area and we’re going to try our best to achieve that.”
The long-term plan this summer always included another defender. Saliba’s setback and Timber’s continued absence simply turned a priority into an emergency. Arsenal have been walking a tightrope at the back; now they are paying to step off it.
Avoiding a repeat of last season
Until the Konsa deal moved forward, Arteta had been banking on Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera to stay fit and available, a risky bet for a side with title ambitions and a gruelling schedule.
He knows the danger too well. Last season’s run-in left scars, with Arsenal exposed at right-back and Arteta forced into uncomfortable solutions. Mosquera, more naturally suited to the flank, was stretched, while Declan Rice even found himself filling in as an emergency defender.
“I would like to have the squad as big as possible because we know what we are fighting for, how long this is,” Arteta said. “I will learn again from the past, especially last year, when we got in some difficulties, especially when we had two or three injuries in the same area of the pitch.”
That is the backdrop to Konsa’s arrival: not a luxury signing, but a correction. Arsenal are trying to build a squad that can absorb the blows of a long season without buckling in the same place twice.
If the final details fall into place as expected, Konsa will walk into a dressing room that has been crying out for another senior defender. The real intrigue comes next: how quickly he settles, how boldly Arteta reshapes his back line – and whether this move is the difference between falling short again and finally lasting the distance.
