Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez's Role at Chelsea
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has drawn a firm line under the noise around Enzo Fernandez, insisting the midfielder remains central to his plans despite mounting transfer speculation.
Manchester City have been circling, with the Premier League champions strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old Argentina international. Yet a key date has come and gone. The 14 August deadline for a formal bid passed without an offer, and Chelsea have since made their stance clear to Fernandez’s camp: he is not for sale this summer.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso cut through the rumours with a blunt reminder of where things stand.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” he said.
No ambiguity. No invitation for further debate.
Alonso then turned the spotlight onto Fernandez’s behaviour behind the scenes, highlighting the way the midfielder has thrown himself back into club life since returning to the squad.
“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well. I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want,” the Spaniard added.
The message was as much for the dressing room and the stands as it was for any suitors. City’s interest has not gone away as they continue to search for midfield reinforcements, but Chelsea’s current position is simple: Fernandez stays at Stamford Bridge.
The relationship with supporters has not always been smooth. Fernandez has endured a mixed reception during pre-season, his performances scrutinised and his price tag never far from the conversation. Yet Chelsea offered a pointed show of faith when they handed him the captain’s armband in the friendly win over Real Sociedad, a symbolic nod to his status and responsibility within the group.
The clock is ticking towards the 1 September transfer deadline, and Fernandez’s name will keep surfacing in the rumour mill. For now, though, Alonso is planning for a season with the Argentine at the heart of his midfield. If Manchester City want to change that, they will have to do more than just admire from a distance.
