Manchester United's Interest in Alejandro Balde: Firm Stance from Barça Left-Back
Manchester United have picked up the phone. The call went to Jorge Mendes, and the subject was clear: Alejandro Balde.
With the transfer window ticking into its final stretch and left-back a priority position, United have sounded out the Portuguese super-agent about the FC Barcelona defender’s situation and what it would take to prise him away from Catalonia, according to Fabrizio Romano.
United’s search has already hit one dead end. Lewis Hall of Newcastle United featured on their shortlist, only for the Magpies to shut down any prospect of a deal. That pushed Old Trafford’s recruitment team back into the market, scanning for alternatives with the clock running.
Balde’s name has now moved onto the agenda.
Mendes in Barcelona, United in the background
Mendes is in Barcelona this week, holding a series of meetings that stretch beyond Balde. One of the topics on his table is the future of Marc Casado, who is heading for the exit at Spotify Camp Nou.
United’s enquiry drops neatly into that schedule. With club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco both involved in talks with Mendes, the Premier League side’s interest is expected to be raised during those conversations, at least at an exploratory level.
The question is simple: is there any opening at all for a deal?
Balde’s stance: Barcelona or nothing
Right now, the answer from the player’s side is blunt.
Romano reports that Balde has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer. The La Masia product is settled at his boyhood club and sees his future at the Olympic Stadium, even with competition ramping up on his flank.
Joao Cancelo’s permanent arrival gives Barça another high-profile option on the left, and the battle for minutes will be fierce. Balde, though, is not flinching. At 22, he is backing himself to hold his ground and grow into a long-term pillar for the La Liga champions.
The only scenario that could change his thinking is a direct message from the club itself. Unless Barcelona tell him they want him to move on, Balde is not planning to entertain an exit.
A difficult summer, a clear role
His pre-season has been far from smooth. A back issue sidelined him during the early weeks of the summer, stalling his rhythm and raising questions about his readiness for the new campaign.
Once fit, he started to claw that time back. Balde has been drip-fed minutes, including starts in friendlies against FC Basel and Al-Ahly, the latter coming in the Joan Gamper Trophy under the lights last night.
He remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028, a deal that underlines how heavily the club have already invested in his future. With Cancelo only just through the door, Balde is expected to start this weekend against Elche, a reminder that, for all the noise, he still sits at the front of the queue.
United have made their move, at least behind the scenes. The window closes in less than two weeks. Now the question is whether Barcelona’s resolve – and Balde’s loyalty – hold firm under late Premier League pressure.
