Enzo Maresca Prepares for Champions League Clash with Porto

Enzo Maresca is not in the mood to play it safe.

With Porto looming in the Champions League league phase on Tuesday and a Manchester derby already casting a shadow over the week, the Manchester City head coach is expected to reshuffle his pack – and that could mean a step back for Enzo Fernandez.

The £125m midfielder was never meant to start against Coventry City at the weekend. He was listed for the bench, eased in, protected. Then Nico O'Reilly felt his back in the warm-up, and the plan went out the window. Fernandez was thrown straight into the XI for his full debut and worked 76 intense minutes alongside Elliot Anderson.

It was earlier than Maresca had mapped out. It was also a reminder of why rotation matters in a season that refuses to slow down.

Bouaddi waiting in the wings

With only three days between Coventry and the trip to the Estadio do Dragao, Maresca is expected to lean heavily on his squad depth. One name stands out: Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The midfielder arrives with Champions League minutes already banked from his time at Lille. He knows the rhythm, the noise, the pressure. This is not a player who needs hand-holding under the lights in Europe. If Maresca wants fresh energy and a calmer schedule for Fernandez ahead of the derby, Bouaddi is the obvious switch.

His inclusion would likely be one of up to four changes from the side that took care of Coventry.

Foden pushing to start

Up front, Iliman Ndiaye’s debut ended in the 87th minute with cramp, a frustrating but manageable bump for the Senegalese attacker. He is expected to be available for Porto, yet his place is far from guaranteed.

Phil Foden is back to full fitness and pushing hard. A fully sharp Foden is difficult to leave out in any game, let alone a Champions League night away from home. His ability to drift inside, dictate tempo and combine with the central players could tilt Maresca’s thinking, especially with Jeremy Doku still sidelined by a calf issue.

If Foden steps in, the attacking line behind Erling Haaland suddenly looks very different in tone: more control, more guile, less raw chaos.

Fresh legs at full-back

At the weekend, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol filled the full-back roles, giving City solidity and balance. For Porto, Maresca has alternatives and, crucially, legs that haven’t just gone through a Premier League battle.

Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are both pushing for starts out wide in defence. Their inclusion would add thrust and dynamism against a Porto side likely to test the flanks through William Gomes and Pepe. Nunes offers a more adventurous, midfield-style interpretation of the role, while Ait-Nouri brings direct running and sharp one-v-one ability.

Rotate there, and City gain energy where games are often decided in Europe: in the wide channels, late in the second half, when concentration and stamina begin to fray.

How City could line up

All of that points towards Maresca making use of the depth that has been carefully assembled for exactly this kind of week. A possible XI for the Estadio do Dragao could see a different spine around familiar stars:

Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Dias, Ait-Nouri; Anderson, Bouaddi; Semenyo, Cherki, Foden; Haaland.

It is a side that mixes Champions League know-how with fresh legs and hungry debutants, a side built for the double demand of Porto away and a derby on the horizon.

Maresca now has a choice: lean on his stars again, or trust the squad he has been given. The way he balances those two nights may tell us a lot about how far this City team can really go this season.
