If Maresca wants City to fly out of the blocks at Wembley, starting Marmoush through the middle makes sense. Haaland waiting on the bench would not be a snub, just a manager treating mid-August like the long season-opener it is.

Behind the striker, the shape looks far clearer. Phil Foden is expected to operate as the No 10, the creative hub between the lines. Out wide, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku bring raw pace and direct running, the kind of weapons that stretch tired legs and unsettle back fours.

Doku, fresh from signing a new contract, has done enough to keep his place. His form and his future are aligned; he looks central to Maresca’s early plans.

Midfield Puzzle Without Rodri

The real headache sits a little deeper.

The timing complicates everything. Anderson, Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki have only just returned to training. Throwing any of them straight into a starting XI at Wembley would be a statement – and a gamble. Early August rarely forgives undercooked legs.

Rodri’s situation narrows the choices further. The midfielder is back after minor back surgery, but he remains in rehabilitation and this game comes too soon. City must defend the middle of the pitch without their metronome.
