Daniel Farke Confirms Joe Rodon's Injury Will Sideline Him for 8-10 Weeks

Leeds United have been dealt a major early-season blow, with Daniel Farke confirming that defensive linchpin Joe Rodon will be out for at least eight to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old pulled up during the first half of Sunday’s draw with Brentford, clutching his hamstring before limping off in clear pain. Any lingering hope that it might be minor disappeared when Farke faced the media ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Bad news with him,” Farke admitted. “(He has a) serious hamstring injury and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, so he will definitely not play before the next international break. Also, probably not the first games after the international break. Of course, it’s a big blow for us because he’s a key player, but it’s football and sometimes you have to deal with injuries.”

A cornerstone ripped out

For Farke, this is not just the loss of a name on the teamsheet. It’s the removal of the cornerstone of his backline.

Rodon has been central to Leeds’ defensive structure since arriving in 2023. The Wales international underlined his long-term commitment by signing a new four-year deal in August, a statement of intent from both player and club. Since joining, he has featured in 139 matches in all competitions, chipping in with three goals but, more importantly, bringing authority and stability to a defence built around his presence.

Now Farke must re-draw his plans on the fly.

Leeds' early-season momentum

Leeds had built early-season momentum with Rodon at the heart of things. A gritty 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend set the tone, followed by a 1-1 draw at Elland Road against Brentford. They also knocked Forest out of the Carabao Cup to reach the third round, hinting at a squad beginning to find its rhythm.

That rhythm has just been disrupted.

Transfer window closed, problems open

The timing could hardly be more awkward. The injury lands just as the transfer window has shut, leaving Leeds to cope with what they have.

Leeds did act late in the window, bringing in left-back Melvin Bard and winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya to strengthen key areas. Asked to reflect on the club’s business after those arrivals, Farke sounded broadly satisfied, even if he hinted that perfection is rare in any window.

“Not all the wishes are always completely fulfilled, but I would say 90, 95 per cent of what we wanted to do is really good,” he said. “We also need a bit of luck in the offence, perhaps there are no injuries to some key players.”

That wish for luck has already gone unanswered at the other end of the pitch. Now the squad will be asked to absorb the absence of one of its most reliable figures.

Testing run without a leader

The schedule offers no sympathy.

After Brighton away on Saturday, Leeds head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on September 9. Five days later, Newcastle United arrive at Elland Road on September 14.

Three demanding games. One key defender missing. A backline about to be stress-tested.

Farke has spoken about dealing with injuries as part of football’s reality. The next two months will show whether Leeds have the depth and resilience to live that mantra without the man who usually holds their defence together.
