Gavi's Journey: From Fearless Teenager to Barcelona Leader

Gavi is no longer the untouchable name on Barcelona’s teamsheet, but inside the club there is no doubt about where he stands. Hansi Flick trusts him, plans with him and pushes him. The midfielder, for his part, is fighting through one of the most competitive midfields in Europe, hunting for every minute he can get.

The Andalusian has already lived several careers in one. At 22, he has gone from fearless teenager to injured leader to a player trying to reclaim his space in a Barça side that is evolving fast. Speaking to “Men’s Health”, he opened a window into how that journey has changed him.

“Now there is much greater pressure than there was when I was 17 years old. At that time I did not realise where I was. The younger I was, the more I enjoyed football,” he admitted. The innocence has gone. The weight of the badge has not.

Learning to wait

Injuries forced that lesson on him. Gavi missed almost an entire season after his serious knee problem, a brutal pause for a player who only knows how to play at full throttle. It changed him.

“Perhaps I was not patient in the past, but now I am more patient,” he said. During his recovery he had to live by stages, not by matches. “When I was injured, I had to complete the stages and set goals. It was also useful for me to learn other things beyond football. Now I can say that I take care of myself much better than I did when I started my professional career.”

The message is clear: the same intensity that once drove him to chase every ball now has to be balanced with self‑care. The wild kid has learned to hit the brakes when he needs to.

The knee that changed everything

That knee is never far from his thoughts. Even on days when he does not start, the work does not stop.

“My knee must always be strong, whether I play or not,” he explained. “I cannot be lax because the injury could happen at any moment.”

There is no room for complacency, no space for shortcuts. Behind the recovery, there was a small, tight circle. “I isolated myself with my family, and that helped me a lot,” he said. Away from the noise, they were the ones who carried him through the long months when the stadium lights were out of reach.

Backing Lamine Yamal

From one prodigy who has been through the fire to another who is just stepping into it. Gavi’s eyes light up when he talks about Lamine Yamal, and his praise is pointed: what the world sees at the weekend is only half the story.

“This player is very skilful on the pitch, but he surprises you even more in training,” Gavi revealed. “I only hope he keeps developing. He is aware of his abilities. He can be among the best of all time.”

That is a big statement from someone who has already lived the pressure of being labelled the future of Barcelona. For Gavi, the key is not the talent but the mindset.

“I see him as mentally strong, and that is the most important thing in the end,” he added. “He knows what he wants, and he still has a long football future ahead of him. He must continue in this way every day, because the present is the most important thing, and everyone will be watching him closely every day.”
