Giannis Konstantelias' Bundesliga Debut Turns Worrisome for Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund’s new right-wing spark, 23-year-old Giannis Konstantelias, saw a dream Bundesliga debut turn abruptly into a night of worry and silence.

From lift-off to alarm

With Dortmund 2-0 up shortly after the restart, Konstantelias drove into another duel on the flank. In the challenge, his knee twisted awkwardly. He went down, stayed there, then covered his face with his hands. The mood in the stadium changed instantly.

The highlight came in first-half stoppage time. At 45+1, Maximilian Beier slipped a sharp ball in from the left. Konstantelias cut inside with purpose, aimed low, and fired through the legs of HSV defender Sebastiaan Bornauw. Bornauw got the slightest touch, just enough to wrong-foot goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes, who had no chance at 2-0.

Only days earlier, Dortmund had brought Konstantelias in from PAOK Saloniki for €26 million after a move for Said El Mala from 1. FC Cologne collapsed. The plan was clear: he would step into the void left by Karim Adeyemi’s transfer to Barca.

He had already flashed his potential in the Super Cup against Bayern Munich, impressing despite a 2-1 defeat. The profile fit, the price tag underlined the club’s belief, and the early signs backed it all up.
