Cole Palmer’s England return has been cut short before it even began – and his misfortune has opened the door for Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Chelsea forward is set to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor injury, with Gibbs-White lined up for a recall ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures, according to BBC reports. It is a brutal twist for Palmer, who had only just fought his way back into the international picture.

He played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, but the knock he picked up has now cost him his place with the Three Lions. For a player already carrying the scars of missing the last World Cup, the timing could hardly be worse.

Palmer has been central to Chelsea’s start to the season. Six starts from seven league games. Four goals. Two assists. After a summer spent watching the World Cup from home, he had responded exactly as Tuchel wanted: by becoming a driving force at club level.

That made this recall significant. Tuchel had brought him back into the senior fold with a clear challenge. Before the injury, the England manager made no attempt to hide his expectations, insisting Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to keep his shirt and justify his selection.

Palmer’s last England appearance came in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March. Since then, the wait for a proper run at international level has only grown longer. Now it stretches on again.

His fitness record has not helped. A recurring groin problem disrupted his 2025-26 campaign, raising eyebrows inside and outside Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca, then his Chelsea manager and now in charge at Manchester City, openly admitted the situation “did not make sense” as the forward struggled to stay fully fit.

That lingering concern has come back into focus. And with Palmer stepping aside, the chance falls to Gibbs-White.

The Nottingham Forest playmaker had been one of the final cuts from Tuchel’s original squad. On Friday, the England boss revealed Gibbs-White had come “incredibly close” to making it. Now, with one phone call, he is back in.

He deserves the shot. Gibbs-White has started the domestic season sharply, with one goal and two assists in five league games for Forest, knitting attacks together and carrying real threat between the lines. His last England outing came in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October 2025; since then, he has been waiting for another chance to convince.
