Go Ahead Eagles Frustrated by Missed Chances in 1-1 Draw Against FC Groningen

Go Ahead Eagles left cursing missed chances after being held to a 1-1 draw by FC Groningen at De Adelaarshorst, a result that felt like a defeat for the home crowd and like sheer survival for the visitors.

Willumsson stuns against the run of play

Go Ahead started on the front foot, pushed high, and pinned Groningen back early. The pattern was clear: Joseph Oosting’s side had the ball, Groningen waited and hoped for a break.

They got one.

Against the flow of the game, Brynjólfur Willumsson took aim from the edge of the box and ripped a fierce strike past Kjetil Haug. One touch, one hit, 0-1. De Adelaarshorst fell silent for a moment, stunned that the visitors, who had barely threatened, suddenly led.

From there, Groningen retreated even further. Lines dropped, tackles flew in, and every clearance bought a few more precious seconds.

Go Ahead kept coming. Søren Tengstedt, buzzing between the lines, looked the most dangerous. He almost produced a moment of real class with a delicate lob, only for Etienne Vaessen to read it superbly and claw the ball away. That save kept Groningen’s fragile lead intact at the break.

Tengstedt strikes back

The second half turned into a siege.

Go Ahead tightened the screw, wave after wave. Thibo Baeten went close, Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson found space, and Groningen were forced deeper with every attack, defending with bodies rather than structure.

Still the clock ticked on, still Groningen held.

Until the 82nd minute.

The pressure finally broke them. A sharp move through the heart of the pitch sliced Groningen open, and when the ball fell to Tengstedt, the outcome felt inevitable. The forward thumped his finish past Vaessen for 1-1, a ruthless strike and his fifth goal of the season. That tally sends him clear as the Eredivisie’s current top scorer, and De Adelaarshorst erupted in relief as much as joy.

But Go Ahead weren’t satisfied with parity.

Sigurdarson’s miss leaves Eagles empty-handed

The equaliser only fuelled them. Red shirts surged forward, the noise rose, and Groningen clung on, running on fumes.

Then came the moment.

A low ball, a simple finish beckoning, and Sigurdarson staring at an open goal with the game at his mercy. It looked harder to miss. Somehow, he slid his effort wide. Hands went to heads, the stadium groaned, and Groningen breathed again.

That was the chance. The winner, gone in an instant.

When the final whistle blew, both teams had a point, but they did not share the same feeling. Go Ahead walked off with frustration etched on every face, knowing they had done almost everything right except finish the job. Groningen, exhausted and relieved, had nothing more to give — and just enough to take something home.
