Goretzka Injured: Aston Villa's Struggles Continue

Leon Goretzka’s fresh start in England has hit an early and unwelcome pause.

On Monday, the 31-year-old Aston Villa midfielder announced on Instagram that he has to step away from action for a short spell and will not be available again until after the international fixtures at the end of September and start of October.

“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after the time without matches,” Goretzka wrote. “It is frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full strength.”

He used the same message to thank Villa’s supporters for the reception he has received since arriving from Bayern Munich, calling the welcome “warm” and stressing that he feels in the right place and comfortable at the club. Over the next few weeks, he wants one thing only: to recover fully.

The timing could hardly be worse for Unai Emery.

Key absence in a crucial spell

Goretzka’s enforced break means he will miss at least four more matches. Villa travel to Bruges on Tuesday in the Champions League still searching for their first points of the season. That European assignment is followed by two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup tie before the international break brings a brief pause.

On 10 October, the Birmingham club are scheduled to return to action against Brentford FC. Only then is Goretzka expected to be back in contention.

For a side already struggling for rhythm, losing a 73-cap Germany international in the heart of midfield strips away experience and control at exactly the moment they need both.

From Bayern pillar to Villa’s troubled project

After eight years at Bayern Munich, Goretzka joined Aston Villa on a free transfer in the summer, a marquee arrival intended to help drive the club’s next step under Emery. Instead, the early weeks of the season have unravelled.

Villa have made a disastrous start. After three league matches, Emery’s team are still without a win and without a goal. Two defeats to open the campaign set an ominous tone; a draw against Nottingham Forest at the weekend finally put a point on the board, but did little to ease the wider concerns.

The squad has also been stripped of some of the core that underpinned their recent success. Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins all departed in the summer window, removing goals, stability and familiarity in one hit.

Now, with Goretzka temporarily out of the picture and a daunting schedule bearing down, Villa face a stark question: can this reshaped side steady itself before the season’s early damage becomes something far more serious?
