Haaland Fit for Community Shield Showdown Against Arsenal

Erling Haaland is fit and available for Manchester City’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal – but he might have to wait for his moment.

The Norwegian striker briefly alarmed supporters when he sat out the closing stages of Thursday’s open training session, but Enzo Maresca moved quickly to shut down any talk of an injury setback ahead of the curtain-raiser in Cardiff.

“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City head coach said on Friday, underlining that his main marksman is ready for selection.

Haaland ready, but not guaranteed to start

Haaland punished Arsenal last season, scoring twice in three meetings, and his presence alone changes the temperature of any game. The twist this time is his preparation.

He did not play a single minute in pre-season, granted an extended break after helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Match fit? Not yet. Available? Yes. That balance may push Maresca towards easing him in from the bench rather than throwing him straight into the starting XI.

The man in possession of the shirt is Omar Marmoush. The forward has hit stride quickly, leading the line and scoring twice in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid. Form matters at this stage of the year, and Marmoush has it.

Midfield reshuffle as Reijnders heads out

Behind the front line, Maresca has a problem he could do without. Tijjani Reijnders is on the brink of completing his move to Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League, a deal expected to be finalised before City face Arsenal. That departure leaves a vacancy alongside Mateo Kovacic in central midfield.

Rico Lewis is one solution. He started there in the win over K-League Allstars and offers control and energy in tight spaces.

Then there is Elliot Anderson, the £116million summer signing. The England international could make his Manchester City debut in Cardiff, but he has only just returned to training, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki. That lack of sharpness may nudge Maresca towards the more ready Nico Gonzalez, who stands in pole position to partner Kovacic if the Italian wants stability from the first whistle.

Rodri is back at the club after minor back surgery and working through his rehabilitation. His presence around the squad is a boost, but all indications are that this game comes too soon for him to play any part.

Defensive battles and a rising left-back

At the back, one name has forced itself into the conversation. Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed across pre-season and is pushing hard for the left-back slot. If he starts, Josko Gvardiol is likely to slide inside to form a central defensive pairing with Ruben Dias, giving City a blend of aggression and composure at the heart of their back line.

So Maresca walks into his first major date of the campaign with options, dilemmas, and one very significant weapon ready to be unleashed when the moment feels right. Haaland is fit. The question now is whether City need him from the start, or whether Arsenal will have to deal with him charging on when the game is already on a knife-edge.
