Hull City Takes Perfect Defence to Stamford Bridge

Hull City walk into Stamford Bridge on Saturday carrying the one record no one expected them to own in mid-September: they are the only team across England’s top four divisions yet to concede a league goal this season.

Three games, three clean sheets. One more and they will match a mark last set by Manchester City in 2015-16 – four shutouts to start a Premier League campaign – and break new ground for a promoted club. No side coming up has ever opened a top-flight season with four straight games without their goalkeeper being beaten.

It is a remarkable platform for a squad that was ripped up and rebuilt in the summer. Sergej Jakirovic had 18 new signings to bed in and called the task a “very big problem.” On the pitch, his players have treated it like an opportunity. Seven points from nine, third in the table, and a defensive line that has refused to blink against Manchester United, Aston Villa and Coventry.

The challenge now jumps a level.

Injuries bite, but Hull’s core remains

Hull arrive in west London with a stretched squad. Ilyas Ansah, Jack Butland, Elliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Charlie Hughes and Hidemasa Morita are all out injured, trimming Jakirovic’s options at both ends of the pitch.

Off the pitch, the club had a scare on Friday when winger Sorba Thomas was involved in a road traffic accident near the training ground. He escaped without injury, but the emotional jolt has been enough for Hull to plan without him; he is expected to miss the matchday squad.

Jakirovic’s back three, though, looks settled. Nobel Mendy was withdrawn at half-time against Sunderland in midweek, but that was a rotation call rather than a fitness concern. He is set to return to the starting XI and anchor the defence again alongside Semi Ajayi and John Egan.

Midfield jigsaw and McBurnie’s milestone

In midfield, Hull have had to make hard choices. Oscar Zambrano has shaken off a hamstring issue but has been left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad, shutting the door on his involvement until at least January. That decision clears the way for Matt Crooks, Lucas Gourna-Douath, Christos Mouzakitis and Jens Hjerto-Dahl to battle for one spot alongside Regan Slater.

Jakirovic’s wing-backs will carry huge responsibility. Expect Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles to shuttle up and down the flanks, trying to give Hull an out ball while still protecting that precious clean-sheet run.

Up front, Oli McBurnie is chasing a different kind of landmark. He has yet to score this season, but his work without the ball has been relentless; he leads the division for high-intensity pressures, the unseen graft that underpins Hull’s defensive record. At Stamford Bridge, he could make his 100th Premier League appearance – a personal milestone wrapped inside a statement game for his club.

Behind him, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli Belloumi and youngster Stroud are expected to operate in the pockets, tasked with turning rare breaks into something that can silence a restless home crowd.
