Indiana Hoosiers Maintain Unbeaten Record in 1-1 Draw Against Louisville

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana walked out of Louisville with its unbeaten record intact, but only after Easton Bogard ripped the night back in the Hoosiers’ favor.

A tight, tactical battle finished 1-1 at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Family Stadium on Monday, with No. 3 Indiana (3-0-1) and Louisville (3-0-1) trading spectacular second-half strikes in a meeting of two early-season unbeaten sides.

Indiana still hasn’t given up a goal from open play this season. It took a perfectly placed free kick to finally put the Hoosiers behind.

A cagey first half

The opening 45 minutes felt like a scouting report come to life. Both teams cautious, both back lines organized, neither willing to over-commit.

Louisville had more of the initiative. The Cardinals outshot Indiana 4-1 before halftime, probing but never quite breaking through. Indiana, usually so sharp going forward, struggled to carve out anything truly dangerous as the match settled into a chess match in midfield.

The real drama waited for after the break.

Escudero breaks through, controversy follows

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Indiana’s defensive record finally cracked.

In the 58th minute, Louisville earned a free kick about 25 yards from goal. Andrés Escudero stepped up, shaped his body and whipped a right-footed effort toward the top left corner. Michal Mroz stretched, but the ball curled just beyond his reach and crashed into the net.

Louisville 1, Indiana 0 — and for the first time all season, the Hoosiers trailed.

The response was immediate. From the restart, Indiana pushed forward and within moments Clay Murador went down in the box. The referee pointed straight to the spot. A lifeline, or so it seemed.

Then came the VAR check. After review, the decision was overturned. No penalty. No chance to level. The Indiana bench and players were left to swallow the frustration and find another way.

Bogard’s answer

They did, and it came from a man in form.

In the 67th minute, Indiana finally found its “moment of brilliance.” Alex Barger slipped a pass into Bogard on the left side of the box. What followed looked like a training-ground finishing drill executed at full speed.

Bogard cut inside. Shaped to shoot. Hesitated just long enough to freeze the defender. Took one more touch. Then curled his shot high into the far right corner.

Indiana 1, Louisville 1. A stunning equalizer, and Bogard’s third goal in four matches this season.

Count the exhibitions and his run looks even more ruthless: seven goals in six games for the third-year forward.

Barger, meanwhile, picked up his second assist of the season, matching his career high and underlining his growing influence in the final third.

Late push, unbeaten record preserved

The goal flipped the momentum. Indiana, buoyed by finally breaking through, pushed for a winner while Louisville tried to regain control.

The best late chance fell to center back Josh Maher in the 85th minute. Rising to meet a corner, he steered a header on target, but it went straight at the goalkeeper. A few inches either side and Indiana might have been heading home with a statement road win.

Instead, the whistle blew on a 1-1 draw that both sides will feel told a partial story.

For Indiana, the defensive record remains remarkable. Through four matches — 360 minutes — the Hoosiers have conceded only twice: a penalty against Notre Dame on August 20 and Escudero’s free kick in Louisville. No opponent has yet broken them down from open play.

The attack, powered by Bogard’s hot streak and Barger’s supply, continues to show signs it can match that standard.

Next comes a different kind of test: the home spotlight.

Indiana returns to Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium to host the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, welcoming Cal Poly to Bloomington on Friday, Sept. 4, before facing Denver on Sept. 7.

The unbeaten run is alive. The question now is how long this defense — and Bogard’s scoring touch — can keep it that way.
