Inter vs Udinese: Champions Aim to Bounce Back

Inter know this fixture can sting. Udinese walked into San Siro at a similar stage last season and left with a 2-1 win, one of the shocks of that campaign.

This time, the context is different.

Cristian Chivu’s side are defending champions, three wins from three in Serie A, and coming off a sharp – if ultimately losing – display at the Bernabéu. They fell 2-1 to Real Madrid in their opening UCL league-phase match, but the performance underlined why they are again serious Scudetto favourites.

Now they get almost a full week to reset, refocus and go again on Monday night. Kick-off is 19:45 BST at San Siro on Matchday 4 of the 2026/27 Serie A season.

Inter’s grit behind the glamour

Inter have started the league campaign with authority. They dismantled Monza 4-1, dug out a win away at Cagliari, then edged Napoli 3-2 in a wild, end-to-end contest at San Siro.

Those Napoli-type games define title runs. When the control slips and the match becomes a fight, champions find a way. Inter have done exactly that, showing they can live with chaos and still come out on top.

The only blemish so far came in Europe. At the Bernabéu, an error from goalkeeper Josep Martínez proved costly in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Chivu did not hesitate to back his keeper publicly, defending him after the match and trying to cut off any brewing debate in goal.

Defensively, though, Inter have not been untouchable. Napoli scored twice at San Siro. Real did the same in Spain. The structure is strong, the intensity is high, but there are gaps to exploit if you’re brave enough to run into them.

Udinese arrive bruised but dangerous

Udinese travel with four points from their opening three league games and a sense that their ceiling is higher than that total.

They opened with a 1-1 draw against an impressive Como side, then won at Monza, a result that hinted at a team comfortable playing on the road and on the break. The momentum stalled with a 2-1 home defeat to Lazio, a match that turned on injuries more than tactics.

Kosta Runjaić lost Jakub Piotrowski and Oumar Solet to first-half injuries in that Lazio game, and both are doubts for Monday night. Keinan Davis was also withdrawn early to manage his workload. Nicolò Zaniolo and Giorgi Chakvetadze remain unavailable.

The absences matter. Solet’s injury, in particular, disrupted Udinese’s back three and their defensive shape suffered. Lazio took advantage, and Inter will certainly try to do the same.

Even so, Udinese have been stubborn. They have yet to lose by more than a single goal this season. Their only defeat is that 2-1 against Lazio. They also know what it feels like to win here: that 2-1 victory at San Siro last season is still fresh enough to give them belief.

Runjaić’s side sit deep, absorb pressure and counter. That style naturally limits heavy defeats. It frustrates, drags the game into narrow margins and keeps them in contests that, on paper, they might not belong in.

Expected lineups

Inter Milan expected XI:

  • J. Martínez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Sucic, Dimarco; Thuram, L. Martínez

Udinese expected XI:

  • Okoye; Kristensen, Kabasele, Abankwah; Ehizibue, Ekkelenkamp, Karlström, Atta, Kamara; Davis, Bayo

Goals likely at both ends

History suggests Udinese won’t go quietly. They have scored in five of their last nine visits to Inter, and they led against Lazio before injuries tore up the game plan.

Inter, for all their quality, have allowed chances. Napoli and Real Madrid both scored twice against them in the last week. With Josep Martínez under scrutiny after his mistake in Spain, Udinese will sense an opportunity to test the nerves early.

Inter remain heavy favourites. They have won eight of the last 10 meetings between these clubs, with no draws in that stretch. A home win looks the overwhelmingly likely outcome.

The more intriguing angle is Inter to win with both teams on the scoresheet. The implied probability of that combination sits at 35.7%, a more appealing play than the straight home win, which is priced around an 80% implied chance.

Udinese to keep it close

Inter’s midweek trip to Madrid was intense, physically and mentally. Long European nights often leave a mark on the following league performance, especially early in the season when rhythms are still forming.

Udinese, meanwhile, have made a habit of staying in games. They have not yet lost by more than one goal in 2026/27, and their only defeat was that tight 2-1 against Lazio. Their deep block and counter-attacking plan naturally compress scorelines.

Inter’s win over Napoli came by a single goal. Udinese’s approach should again slow the game, clog central spaces and force Inter to work for every chance.

With that in mind, Udinese +2 on the 3-way handicap looks well-judged. That angle lands if the visitors win, draw or even lose by one. Given their resilience so far and their history of frustrating bigger sides, it fits the pattern.

Lautaro’s numbers demand a goal

Then there is Lautaro Martínez.

Two goals from 3.1 expected goals this season tell a clear story: he is getting the chances. The finishing will catch up. An xG rate of 1.18 per 90 minutes is elite territory, the output of a striker constantly arriving in the right zones.

Last season he hit 17 league goals and 22 in all competitions. Those are not the numbers of a forward about to cool off. They are the numbers of a player due another surge.

Udinese’s defensive issues only strengthen the case. Without Oumar Solet, their back line lost balance against Lazio, and Inter at San Siro will apply far greater, more sustained pressure. With Dimarco and Dumfries pushing high and Thuram stretching the back three, the spaces around the box are exactly where Lautaro thrives.

Backing him to score at any time – at an implied probability of 57.1% – aligns with both the data and the match-up. The chances will come. His recent finishing record suggests he won’t keep passing them up.

How it all shapes up

Inter look primed to respond to their European setback with another statement in Serie A. Udinese, wounded but organised, will aim to drag them into a narrow, nervy contest and snatch something on the break.

Prediction: Inter 2-1 Udinese, with Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram on target for the hosts and Bayo striking for the visitors.

If that script holds, Inter’s title defence stays on track – but the memory of last year’s Udinese ambush will linger. Can Chivu’s side finally turn these tricky, awkward fixtures into routine wins, or will Serie A’s champions keep living on the edge?
