Friday night in Suffolk has some edge to it.

Ipswich Looking for a Response

Ipswich’s return to the top flight started brightly with a win over Sunderland, then crashed back to earth with a 5-2 defeat to Manchester United. That kind of scoreline lingers. Gary O’Neil now has to show his team can take a punch and stand up again.

He is expected to go compact and cautious, leaning on a five-man defence. Darnell Furlong may shift into a wing-back role, asked to provide width without sacrificing solidity. Emersonn is a doubt after limping off last weekend, another headache for a manager who knows he cannot afford to be open against Liverpool’s attacking depth.

Exequiel Palacios is tipped to start in central midfield ahead of Marcelino Nunez, a sign O’Neil wants more control and bite in the middle. The predicted Ipswich XI: Scherpen; Furlong, O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Fatawu, Palacios, Lukic, Maeda; Enciso.

It’s a side built to absorb, then spring. The question is whether it can hold long enough.

Liverpool’s New Era Still Waiting to Ignite

Two games, two draws. A 2-2 at Newcastle, another 2-2 against Nottingham Forest. Liverpool under Andoni Iraola have flickered but not yet burned.

Dominik Szoboszlai is set to make his 150th appearance for the club, a landmark that underlines how quickly he has become central to their plans. Around him, there is pace, invention and a lot of expectation.

A first win under Iraola would not just be welcome. It feels necessary.

History Tilts Red, but O’Neil Knows the Script

The numbers are blunt. Liverpool dominate the head-to-head. They are unbeaten in all six of their Premier League visits to Portman Road, with four wins and two draws.

And yet, Gary O’Neil has his own piece of history. He was the last manager of a newly promoted side to beat Liverpool, doing it with Bournemouth in 2023. He knows how to frustrate them, how to tilt a game of survival into an upset.

The bookmakers still lean heavily towards the visitors. Liverpool are priced at 11/20, the draw at 7/2, an Ipswich win at 4/1.

Portman Road has seen Liverpool come and go without defeat for years. On Friday night, with Iraola chasing his first win and O’Neil chasing a statement, does that streak finally crack or stretch even further into the new era?
