Ismaila Sarr Injury Update: Liverpool's Transfer Pursuit Stalled

Liverpool’s pursuit of Ismaila Sarr has hit a standstill, and this time it has nothing to do with transfer standoffs or dressing-room drama.

Crystal Palace manager Sage has moved to shut down claims that the winger is refusing to train to force a move, insisting Sarr is simply injured and in too much pain to join full sessions.

Injury, not rebellion

Liverpool turned to Sarr after their move for Yankuba Minteh collapsed and have already tested Palace’s resolve with a £50 million offer. Noise around the 28-year-old has grown louder by the day, with links to Liverpool, Galatasaray and Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal circling over Selhurst Park.

That speculation quickly sparked rumours that Sarr had downed tools. Sage was having none of it.

“Ismaila Sarr is injured. He is in pain with his groin – that’s why you didn’t see him [train] with us today,” the Palace boss said, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. “He is in individual training because he is really in pain with his groin. But we’ll prepare him, he needs time.”

The groin problem has already ruled Sarr out of Palace’s Premier League opener against Everton and he will also miss Friday night’s daunting clash with Manchester City. For a player in the middle of a transfer storm, the timing could hardly be more uncomfortable.

Liverpool links and contract reality

Liverpool’s interest is real and substantial, and Sage did not pretend otherwise. He knows exactly what it means when a player’s name is tied to a club of that size.

“It’s always difficult for a player when your name is associated with a club like Liverpool,” he admitted. Yet he was equally clear about the current reality: Sarr still has three years left on his Palace contract, and his manager expects him to respect it.

“For the moment, the most important thing is to understand the player is not able to play and is in treatment, and what happens with his potential future is really far from me,” Sage said.

The message was deliberate. Whatever happens in the final days of the window, Palace want it known that Sarr’s absence is medical, not political.

Under pressure, but ‘honest’

With the transfer deadline looming, the noise around Sarr has only intensified. Liverpool’s interest, Galatasaray’s presence in the background, Al-Hilal watching from Saudi Arabia – it all feeds the sense that the winger is standing at a crossroads.

Sage recognises that weight. He has already held private talks with Sarr this week, aiming to keep the player’s mindset steady while speculation rages outside.

“I understand that for everybody to have this kind of contact is difficult, because you hesitate a lot,” he said. “But for the moment, he is with us. He is under contract. He is injured and maybe you can make a link between his injury and the situation. But for me, he is honest and I have no problem with that.”

The manager’s stance is clear: no revolt, no refusal, just a player stuck in the most awkward place in modern football – injured, coveted and waiting for a window that is closing fast.

Whether that window shuts with Sarr still in south London or stepping out at Anfield is the question that now hangs over the final days of this market.
