James Maddison Injury Update: Tottenham's Early Season Challenges
Roberto De Zerbi has been dealt an early-season headache with James Maddison picking up a fresh injury just as he returned to competitive action for Tottenham.
The playmaker, carefully managed through pre-season after major knee surgery, had only just stepped back onto a Premier League pitch when trouble struck again.
Maddison suffers new setback
Maddison missed the bulk of last season after undergoing surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the summer, and De Zerbi refused to gamble with him over the summer schedule. His minutes were deliberately restricted, the message clear: no shortcuts with one of Spurs’ most important creative players.
He was finally deemed ready to be involved on the opening weekend and came off the bench at Brentford, replacing Mikey Moore for the final 22 minutes of a grim 3-0 defeat. During that late cameo, the 29-year-old landed awkwardly on his shoulder and required assessment afterwards.
Speaking before Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup second-round tie against Charlton in north London, De Zerbi confirmed the blow but played down the severity.
“Maddison suffered a small injury in his shoulder,” he said, describing it as a minor issue.
Kudus still not ready
There was no such encouragement over Mohammed Kudus. The Ghanaian forward, who has been sidelined since early January with a long-term quad injury, remains short of the required level to feature.
De Zerbi made it clear Kudus is “not yet ready” to play for Tottenham as he continues to build back his fitness after more than half a year out.
Van de Ven and Porro return to the fold
The news is brighter in defence and leadership. New club captain Micky van de Ven will be among the substitutes against Charlton, a significant boost after he missed the entire pre-season following his World Cup campaign with the Netherlands and then sat out the Brentford defeat with a minor, unspecified problem.
Vice-captain Pedro Porro is also set to return to the bench. Like Van de Ven, he played no part in pre-season and missed the opener at Brentford while working back to full fitness after helping Spain win the World Cup in North America earlier in the summer.
Both will at least be back in the matchday squad, restoring some senior presence to De Zerbi’s options.
Big-money signing Savio could debut
There is likely to be a first glimpse of Tottenham’s latest marquee arrival. Savio is in contention to make his debut after completing an £85million move from Manchester City on Tuesday, and the Charlton tie offers an ideal stage for his introduction.
Up front, Dominic Solanke is set to lead the line from the start, with De Zerbi confirming the striker will be in the XI. Teenager Luca Williams-Barnett is also expected to be named on the bench, another nod to the blend of youth and star power Spurs are trying to assemble.
Injury setbacks, returning leaders, and an £85m wild card waiting in the wings: Tottenham’s season is barely underway, but De Zerbi’s juggling act has already begun.
