Jarrad Branthwaite's Journey: Overcoming Injuries to Return to England Squad
Jarrad Branthwaite traces the turning point in his England journey not to a stadium or a training ground, but to a clinic in Munich.
The Everton centre-half has revealed how a “complex” rehabilitation programme in Germany – one that drilled into the links between his injuries, his brain and his movement – has underpinned his return to Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.
From repeat breakdowns to ever-present
Only a few months ago, Branthwaite’s career felt stuck in a loop. Hamstring, groin, hamstring again. Last season he was restricted to just 10 Premier League appearances as the same problem kept dragging him back to the treatment room.
“It was to look at the wider picture, look at the holistic approach of the body essentially,” he said, recalling the conversations that followed his latest setback. After three or four separate injuries, club and player agreed something had to change.
Everton sent the 24-year-old to the MYOS sports and health clinic in Munich at the start of the summer. He stayed for three to four weeks, working with specialists in tandem with the club’s medical staff.
“There were a lot of different things looked at like movement patterns, the brain; it was quite complex, but fingers crossed it has worked,” he explained. The work has paid off so far: Branthwaite has been ever-present in the Premier League this season, a constant in a side that badly missed him when he was gone.
Tears in the derby, doubts in the mind
The lowest point came in April. In the Merseyside derby against Liverpool, Branthwaite went down again with a hamstring injury and had to be carried off in tears. The damage was brutal in every sense.
The injury ended his season. It killed off any late surge for a World Cup place. Everton’s form nosedived without him.
“It is probably the worst thing as a footballer not to be on the pitch,” he admitted. “When it keeps happening it is mentally tough because you are sort of doubting your body and going on the pitch wary of what is going to happen.”
That mental strain was as significant as the physical damage. The Munich programme, with its focus on brain and movement patterns, targeted both. This summer, Everton managed him carefully, easing him through pre-season and controlling his workload.
“I think now I am in a position where I got managed throughout the pre-season, managed my load well and hopefully I can stay on the pitch this season.”
A breakfast call and a renewed belief
The reward arrived in the most ordinary of settings.
“I found out when I was having breakfast – it was a good start to the day,” he said of last week’s call-up. No fanfare, just the message he had been chasing since his England debut as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024.
“It is a proud moment. Over the last season or so it has been a target of mine. When I have been out and not on the pitch, I wanted to get back playing and give myself the best possible chance to be in and around the England squad after missing such a lot of time.”
That target had looked a long way off when he left Anfield in tears. Now, with his body holding up and his confidence restored, it feels far more natural.
“The season has started well individually and as a team,” he said. “England’s got unbelievable talent and players all over the pitch. I believe I am good enough to be in the England squad so hopefully I can show that.”
Spain, Czechia and Croatia will provide a stern test of that belief. After Munich, the injuries, and the doubts, Branthwaite finally has the platform he fought for – now it is down to what he does with it.
