JJ Gabriel will play no part in Manchester United's Premier League 2 clash with Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night, as tensions around the 15-year-old forward's future deepen.

Only a few weeks ago, Gabriel looked like the next big thing fast-tracked through United's system. He scored in both of the club's Premier League 2 fixtures this season, announcing himself with the kind of swagger that turns heads at Carrington and beyond.

On 24 August, in his debut at that level, he lifted the ball coolly over the Ipswich goalkeeper from 20 yards, a finish that spoke of confidence, not caution. Seven days later, against Leicester, he did it again – this time twisting inside the box, beating a defender and firing home in a 4-1 win. Two games, two goals, and a growing sense that United had a prodigy on their hands.

Those performances did more than light up youth reports. They fuelled a genuine belief that Gabriel might be involved in United's opening Champions League game against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick was in the stands for Gabriel’s first Premier League 2 outing, while senior United coaching staff watched the second. The pathway felt clear.

Then came the reality check.

Gabriel was not placed on the A list for the competition – the only route for a player under 16 to feature. United went on to win 4-0, with Carrick using all five substitutes by the 72nd minute. Gabriel never had a chance to step onto the pitch, or even into the matchday squad.

That decision is understood to have been one of the major triggers behind the course of action Gabriel has now taken, though there had been issues before that flashpoint. What once looked like a rapid rise has stalled abruptly.
