Kenya to Face Rwanda in Friendly Match During International Window

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have crammed a third fixture into an already demanding international window, with a friendly against Rwanda confirmed for Monday, 5 October.

Benni McCarthy’s side were already staring at two crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Now they will round off the three-week FIFA window in Kigali, a trip that turns a busy schedule into a real examination of depth and conditioning.

Three games, three tests

Kenya open their campaign at home to Eritrea on Saturday, 26 September at Nyayo National Stadium. That match sets the tone for their AFCON push, with McCarthy given only a few days on the training pitch after the squad reported to camp on Tuesday morning.

Once Eritrea are out of the way, the team heads west. Guinea await on Thursday, 1 October, a tricky away assignment that will immediately reveal how quickly this new-look group can adapt under pressure.

Then comes Rwanda.

The friendly at Amahoro Stadium on 5 October gives McCarthy one last look at his options before the AFCON qualifiers resume later in the campaign. It is not just a tune-up; it is a chance for fringe players to force their way into the core group and for returnees to prove they are fully ready.

Rwanda’s own build-up

Rwanda will arrive at the Kenya clash with their own competitive edge sharpened. The Amavubi host Liberia in Kigali on Friday, 25 September in AFCON qualifying, then hit the road to face 2026 FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde.

By the time they meet Harambee Stars, it will also be Rwanda’s third match of the window. For both sides, the friendly doubles as a final test of stamina and tactical clarity before players head back to their clubs.

McCarthy’s squad takes shape

Kenya’s camp opened on Tuesday with a blend of familiar faces, returning names, and fresh blood.

There is experience between the posts with Byrne Omondi (Gor Mahia), Faruk Shikhalo (Nairobi United), and Brian Bwire (Tusker) battling for the gloves.

At the back, McCarthy welcomes the return of Hannif Wesonga (Jamus) and Vincent Harper (Exeter City), adding steel and versatility to a defensive unit that also includes Michael Kibagwe and Frank Odhiambo from Gor Mahia, Rooney Onyango (Sogndal), Stanley Wilson (AIK), Abud Omar (Tusker), and Amos Wanjala (Valencia), who has earned a call-up.

Midfield carries a distinctly foreign-based flavour. Manzur Okwaro (Stade Reims) and Timothy Ouma (Charlton Athletic) bring European polish, joined by Chris Erambo (Tusker), Duke Abuya (Young Africans), and Marvin Nabwire (Power Dynamos), all expected to fight for control of the engine room.

Up front, the competition looks fierce. Gor Mahia forward Shariff Musa is rewarded for his sharp pre-season form, while Mohammed Bajaber (unattached), Ben Stanley (Gor Mahia), Job Ochieng (Real Sociedad), Javan Ochieng (Hickory FC), Micah Obiero (Carlisle United), and Ryan Ogam (RFC Liège) are all in the frame.

The headline, though, is the return of captain Michael Olunga. The Al-Arabi striker is back from injury and instantly restores a focal point to Kenya’s attack.

For Javan Ochieng, this window could be career-defining. The young winger has been handed a senior call-up and will be eyeing his first cap, possibly in the lower-stakes environment of the Rwanda friendly if McCarthy chooses to rotate.

A window that will ask hard questions

Three matches in 10 days. Travel across the continent. A squad blending home-based hopefuls and Europe-hardened professionals.

Kenya wanted competitive minutes and meaningful preparation for the AFCON campaign. They have them now. The question is simple: who will seize this stretch to nail down a place before the real grind of qualification begins?
