Killian Phillips Joins Republic of Ireland Squad for UEFA Nations League

Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to make his mark on the international stage after a bruising weekend for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s Republic of Ireland squad.

The St Mirren midfielder has been drafted in for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, with Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale both ruled out after suffering injuries on club duty.

McGrath, with Hibernian, and Vale, at Queens Park Rangers, each pulled up during the warm-up before their respective matches against Aberdeen and Preston North End. Hopes that the issues might clear in time for international duty faded quickly. Confirmation arrived on Monday morning: neither would be available for this window.

That opened the door for Phillips.

He is due to link up with the squad in Dublin today, joining the group before they head for Pristina, where Ireland face Kosovo on Thursday in their Nations League opener.

The schedule is unforgiving. After Kosovo, the Boys in Green move on to Debrecen, Hungary, to take on Israel, then return to Dublin for a home clash with Austria at the Aviva Stadium. The window wraps up with a second meeting with Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia.

For Hallgrimsson, it is an early test of depth and adaptability. For Phillips, it is an opportunity.
