Kilmarnock and Hibernian Face Off Amidst Early Season Struggles

Kilmarnock’s season is only five league games old, but the numbers already sting.

Fourteen goals conceded in that short spell drags them into unwelcome company. In the entire 21st century, only three top-flight sides in Scotland have shipped more at this stage of a campaign: Motherwell in 2005-06, Gretna in 2007-08 and Dundee United in 2022-23. None of those seasons is remembered fondly.

The problems don’t stop at the back. At the other end, the goals have dried up completely. Kilmarnock have drawn a blank in three straight Premiership matches, a barren run they haven’t matched since February 2021, when they went five without scoring. For a side that prides itself on being awkward and abrasive, that lack of cutting edge is starting to bite.

Hibernian, though, are hardly in a position to gloat.

Their own home form has collapsed. Five successive league defeats at Easter Road have dragged supporters back to a grim reference point: August 2010, the last time Hibs lost five in a row at home in the top flight. One more slip and they tumble into territory no club wants to visit. The last team to lose six consecutive Scottish Premiership home matches were Dundee, during a bleak spell from February to May 2019.

So two struggling sides meet with history lurking in the background and pressure thick in the air.

Recent Head-to-Heads

Recent head-to-heads offer Hibs a sliver of comfort. Kilmarnock have managed just one win in their last 17 Premiership clashes with Hibernian, drawing six and losing ten. That solitary success came in November 2022, a narrow 1-0 victory carved out under Derek McInnes.

Since then, the balance of power in this fixture has stayed largely green and white. Yet with Kilmarnock leaking goals and Hibs haunted by their own home record, something has to give. The only question now is which crisis deepens and which one finally catches a break.
