Kobbie Mainoo: Future Midfielder with Paul Scholes-Level Vision

Ryan Giggs has tipped Kobbie Mainoo to grow into a midfielder with Paul Scholes-level vision after the youngster battled through 90 gruelling minutes in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to 10-man Manchester City at Old Trafford.

United were outplayed and outmanoeuvred, but Mainoo stayed on the pitch from first whistle to last. On a bruising afternoon, that resilience caught the eye of one of the club’s greatest modern players.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Giggs broke down what makes the 19-year-old stand out.

“It’s not pace, it’s acceleration,” Giggs said. “So, he’s not quick-quick, but he has got that acceleration, and he’s, you know, strong physically. He’s a very, very good player.”

That change of gear, that ability to explode away rather than simply sprint, is what Giggs believes gives Mainoo an edge in tight midfield battles. But it was the teenager’s brain, not just his legs, that drew the most striking comparison.

Giggs likened Mainoo’s developing vision to that of Scholes and suggested the academy graduate can grow into a player capable of dictating games with the same kind of passing range.

Asked directly if Mainoo could reach Scholes’ level of vision, Giggs did not hesitate.

“Yeah, I mean, that should be the first pass a midfielder looks at really, you know, ball in behind that 30-yard switch potentially,” he explained. “That ball forward should be the first pass that you think about. So, if he adds that to his game, as well as the dribbling as well as the short passing, then who knows?”

The message was clear: Mainoo already has the tools, but the next step is to regularly spot – and hit – the killer ball that turns pressure into chances.

As City’s control grew and United’s energy faded, the physical and mental toll on the teenager became obvious. Giggs admitted he felt a twinge of sympathy watching those final, draining minutes.

“I felt sorry for the last 10 minutes because he was still trying to do [too much]. He got the ball taken off him because he was still trying to do the right thing, and he just didn’t have the energy to do it,” Giggs observed.

That, for Giggs, underlined the scale of the task currently on Mainoo’s shoulders.

“As a... central midfielder for Man Utd, he’s still young, he’s still learning the game, and he’s having to learn on the job.”

Thrown into one of the most demanding roles at one of the most scrutinised clubs, Mainoo is being asked to grow up fast. If he adds that Scholes-style forward pass to the rest of his armoury, he might just redefine United’s midfield for the next decade.
