During Borussia Dortmund's Champions League game against Villarreal, teenage forward Konstantinos Karetsas suddenly collapsed on the field, raising alarm among players and fans. The 18-year-old was making his first appearance in Europe’s top club competition when he experienced a medical emergency.

The incident occurred after Karetsas had completed a simple pass but then showed signs of distress, signaling to the referee before sitting down on the grass. Concern quickly spread through the stadium as it became clear something was seriously wrong.

Dortmund Confirms Circulatory Issue

Borussia Dortmund issued an official statement confirming that Karetsas’ collapse was due to circulatory problems. They assured fans that he was stable under the circumstances and was being taken to hospital for further testing. The club said, "Kosta is doing well under the circumstances and is on his way to the hospital for further tests."

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel shared the team’s feelings after the match: "I hope and I think that everything is OK and I hope that he’s back and fit with us soon."

Summer Signings Marked by Injuries

Karetsas joined Dortmund in the summer transfer window, part of a major effort to bring in young talent. He arrived alongside Greece teammate Giannis Konstantelias, with Dortmund paying around €30 million (£25.7m/$34.9m) to sign Karetsas from Genk. Konstantelias was signed for €26 million (£22.3m/$30.2m) from PAOK. Both were expected to play key roles in the season.

Unfortunately, both players have suffered setbacks. Konstantelias likely lost the season to an ACL injury sustained during his Bundesliga debut last month, compounding Dortmund’s difficulties. Manager Niko Kovac now faces challenges adjusting tactics amid these absences.

Dortmund Holds On for Win Despite Incident

Despite the serious situation with Karetsas, Dortmund rallied to secure a 3-2 victory in Spain. The score was 0-0 when Karetsas left the pitch, but the game burst into life afterward. Guirassy, playing his 100th match for Dortmund, scored twice late to clinch the win and surpassed Robert Lewandowski’s club goal tally in the process.

This result keeps Dortmund’s Champions League hopes alive, though the main concern remains Karetsas’ recovery and health.
