Leeds United vs Brentford: Farke Hails Standout Opponent

Elland Road gets its first taste of Premier League football this season on Sunday, and Daniel Farke wants it loud, hostile and unforgiving. Leeds United are two wins from two in all competitions and unbeaten in the league, but the head coach is under no illusions about the scale of the test arriving from west London.

He has already labelled Brentford the standout side of the opening weeks. That is not flattery. It is a warning to his own dressing room.

“We need to be at our very best,” he has told them. Nothing less will do if Leeds are to stretch this bright start into something more substantial.

Team news: key men close, but not quite there

The build-up has been dominated by medical bulletins. Mateo Joseph and Ilia Gruev remain sidelined with knee problems, though there is finally a sliver of light with Gruev. After a second full week back in team training, Farke describes the midfielder as “edging closer” to a return, but not yet ready to be thrown back into the intensity of a Premier League fixture.

On the flanks and at the back, there is cautious optimism. Gabriel Gudmundsson and Wilfried Gnonto have both rejoined full training after separate thigh injuries. That is “definitely good news” in Farke’s words, but the schedule offers little mercy. With such a short turnaround, Leeds will wait to see how their bodies react before deciding whether to risk them from the first whistle.

If the medical team advise restraint, Farke is calm. He has alternatives across midfield and the defensive line and, crucially, a winning team that has given him no footballing reason to tinker.

A settled spine and a striker in rhythm

Continuity has become a quiet weapon. Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach are expected to resume their partnership in central midfield, a pairing that has underpinned back-to-back clean sheets in the league. They screen, they bite, they recycle, and so far they have smothered danger before it has truly developed.

Behind them, James Trafford should continue in goal, protected by a back line built on Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Nihad Muharemović, with Jayden Bogle and James Justin providing width and legs from the flanks. It is not a defence packed with headlines, but it has been packed with discipline.

Up front, the picture is clearer still. Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads the line again, and he does so with rhythm at his back. The forward has scored in each of Leeds’ last two competitive fixtures, rediscovering the penalty-box timing that once made him such a menace. Around him, Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson are set to supply the movement, energy and creativity from the pockets behind and out wide.

On current form, there is no compelling argument to dismantle that structure.

Predicted Leeds XI vs Brentford

Farke is expected to keep faith with a 4-2-3-1 that has given Leeds both control and threat:

Trafford; Rodon, Bijol, Muharemović; Bogle, Stach, Ampadu, Justin; Wilson, Aaronson; Calvert-Lewin.

It is a shape built to compress space without the ball and spring quickly when it is won, exactly the kind of platform Leeds will need against a Brentford side that relish transitions and punish sloppiness.

Kick-off, TV details and the stage ahead

The meeting at Elland Road kicks off at 14:00 BST on Sunday, 30 August 2026, live on Sky Sports Premier League in the UK. A familiar time slot, but an unfamiliar feeling: Leeds with momentum, a settled core and a manager demanding standards that match the noise from the stands.

Brentford arrive as the early-season benchmark. Leeds want to use them as a measuring stick. By Sunday afternoon, we will know whether this unbeaten start is a fleeting spark or the beginning of something far more serious.
