Leeds United vs Crystal Palace: Early Season Stakes at Elland Road

Elland Road wakes up early on Sunday with two very different moods colliding.

On one side, Leeds United. Fresh from a 4-1 dismantling of Newcastle United on Sept. 14, unbeaten in the league, and quietly building the look of a side that expects to stay near the top.

On the other, Crystal Palace. Smarting from a 3-2 defeat to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, yet buoyed by a 4-0 Europa League win over Lech Poznań. A team already glancing a little too often at the wrong end of the table.

This is Matchweek 5, but it already feels like more than that.

Leeds riding league momentum

Daniel Farke’s team have started the Premier League campaign with authority. Two wins, two draws, eight points, sixth in the table — and no league defeats.

The 4-1 win over Newcastle showed what they can do when the attacking pieces click, even if the 6-3 Carabao Cup exit to Chelsea exposed a few defensive cracks. The league, though, tells a different story: control, confidence, and a growing sense of identity.

Injuries will force tweaks. Harry Wilson (thigh), Joe Rodon (hamstring) and Mateo Joseph (knee) are all out, trimming Farke’s options but not his ambition.

He is expected to stick with a back three and wing-backs, a shape that has given Leeds both width and bite. Trafford should start in goal, with Justin, Elvedi and Muharemovic forming the defensive trio. Out wide, Bogle and Gudmundsson are set to provide the running, while Stach, Ampadu and Tanaka bring legs and discipline in midfield.

Up front, the responsibility falls on Calvert-Lewin and Okafor. One a classic focal point, the other more mobile and unpredictable. If they find rhythm early, Elland Road will sense blood.

Palace juggling Europe and survival instincts

Crystal Palace arrive in Yorkshire with a very different kind of pressure.

Seventeenth in the Premier League. Three points from four games. One win, three defeats. It is not yet a crisis, but the warning lights are on.

The 4-0 Europa League victory over Lech Poznań on Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League offered a much-needed release. Goals, confidence, a reminder of their attacking threat. But domestic form does not care about European nights, and the 3-2 loss to Ipswich Town on Sept. 12 still lingers.

This trip to Leeds carries extra weight. Palace need points to climb away from the bottom cluster and, just as importantly, to build belief before the Europa League schedule tightens.

They must do it with key absences. Axel Disasi is suspended. Dean Henderson (ankle), Chadi Riad (knee) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (hamstring) are also out, stripping depth from both ends of the pitch.

Even so, the likely XI still has enough quality to trouble Leeds. Henderson is expected in goal, shielded by a back three of Tomiyasu, Richards and Ahanor. Across midfield, Khalaili, Timber, Wharton and Mitchell will be asked to cover ground and connect play.

Up front, Sarr, Pino and Strand Larsen provide pace, trickery and physical presence. If Palace can get them into space, this game could open up quickly.

For Leeds, Sunday is a chance to turn a good start into something more serious — to stay unbeaten, stay in the top six, and show that the Newcastle result was not a one-off.

For Palace, it is about survival instincts kicking in early. Climb away from 17th, restore some league order, and carry that into Europe with heads up rather than down.
