Lehigh Secures 2-0 Victory Over Loyola in Patriot League Opener

BALTIMORE – For 45 minutes, Lehigh were stuck in neutral. For the next 45, they looked every bit like a Patriot League contender.

The Mountain Hawks opened league play with a sharp 2-0 road win over Loyola Maryland at Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, riding two second-half goals and another clean sheet from junior goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen.

Head coach Dean Koski didn’t sugarcoat the slow start.

“I thought we struggled in the first half to be consistent with the way we wanted to play, but we regrouped at halftime and thought we came out in the second half with better intentions,” the Ingrassia Family men’s head soccer coach said. “We did a better job of creating chances in the second half and did a good job defensively of shutting them down.”

Slow burn, then a breakthrough

Lehigh (1-2-3, 1-0 Patriot League) spent much of the first half absorbing pressure. Loyola (1-6, 0-1 Patriot League) dictated more of the play, outshooting the visitors 6-2 before the break and pinning them back for long stretches.

Kinnunen held the line. The junior made three first-half saves, steady and unfazed, to keep the Greyhounds off the board and send the teams into the locker room locked at 0-0.

That platform was all Lehigh needed.

Barely three minutes after the restart, the attack finally sparked. In the 48th minute, junior forward Bora Turker struck his first goal of the season, finishing off a move created by junior Aiden Gonzalez and first-year midfielder Alex Junquera. One incisive sequence, one clean finish, and the tone of the match flipped.

Loyola, chasing the game now, pushed on. Lehigh smelled space.

Seventeen minutes later, the Mountain Hawks doubled their lead. Senior Thomas Robertson, already off the mark this season, added his second goal of the campaign in the 65th minute to give Lehigh breathing room at 2-0.

The Greyhounds never found a way back.

Defense writes the story

The stat sheet leaned Loyola’s way in volume. The Greyhounds outshot Lehigh 15-10 and earned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The scoreboard told a different story.

Kinnunen added one more save after halftime, finishing with four on the day. It was his third consecutive shutout and the seventh clean sheet of his career, the latest sign of a goalkeeper in rhythm and a back line locked in around him.

“Our backs and Anton are in sync with each other,” Koski said. “I like our mentality and we’re defending better in the box. And when we need Anton to make a save, he’s been there and he’s been sharp.”

Lehigh’s organization in their own penalty area, especially under a late Loyola surge, preserved the result and underlined the team’s emerging identity: difficult to break down, ruthless enough when chances come.

Confidence rising, challenge looming

No part of Lehigh’s early schedule has felt simple, and Koski knows it.

“No game has been easy, and I think our guys have learned a lot early on this season,” he said. “We had good confidence going into this game and we’ll have a better confidence coming out of it.”

The reward for three points on the road? A bigger test waiting at home.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, September 19 at 6 p.m., hosting Army in its Patriot League home opener. Army have started the season well, and Koski is under no illusions about what’s coming.

“We’re glad to get three points on the road, but we know that every game is going to be a challenge for us,” he said. “We’ve got a big game next weekend against Army at home. They’ve had a good start, so it’ll be a good challenge.”

A defense in sync, a goalkeeper in form, and an attack finally clicking after halftime. With Army on deck, Lehigh now has to prove this wasn’t just a one-half surge in Baltimore, but the start of something more sustained in the Patriot League race.
