Liverpool Secure Future with Rio Ngumoha Amid Arsenal Interest

Liverpool look to have won the first big transfer battle of 2027 without even letting it reach the market.

Arsenal’s hunt for a new left winger has taken them past Morgan Rogers, past Vinicius Junior and into dead end after dead end. Gabriel Martinelli has gone, no direct replacement walked through the door in the summer, and David Ornstein has already hinted that January could bring movement.

But not, it seems, for Rio Ngumoha.

Liverpool close in as Arsenal circle

The 18-year-old Liverpool winger has been firmly on Arsenal’s radar, a rare young wide player with the profile and upside to tempt the Premier League champions into testing Anfield’s resolve.

Liverpool’s answer has been blunt. No.

Ngumoha and Liverpool have already thrashed out an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract, as revealed earlier this month by TEAMtalk. The club are now working to turn that framework into a fully signed deal, and the mood on Merseyside is relaxed.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Liverpool do not expect late drama. The club want him to stay. The player is happy where he is. Crucially, he is “set to get regular starts this season”, a promise that carries real weight for a teenager choosing his next step.

That pathway has convinced Ngumoha and stiffened Liverpool’s stance. Arsenal, desperate for a top-level left winger, are staring at another near miss.

‘Rio is Liverpool’s future’

Fabrizio Romano has echoed the same message. He detailed how Liverpool shut down interest in Ngumoha over the summer, when Bayern Munich and others began to circle.

The response from Anfield never changed: not leaving, not for sale, Liverpool trust him, “Rio is Liverpool’s future.”

There were no negotiations. No price. No opening.

That clarity has carried into the autumn. Romano says Liverpool are now in active talks with Ngumoha over a new contract, working through the guarantees and fine details that matter to an emerging star expected to play, not just pose for photos.

The interest around him is real. Romano expects “strong interest” to follow in the coming years, and Arsenal’s situation explains why their name keeps resurfacing. They lost Martinelli, failed to land a marquee winger, reshaped the depth chart by moving on Leandro Trossard and bringing in Christos Tzolis, then chose to ride with what they had.

But elite clubs never stop scanning the horizon. If a chance to move for Ngumoha opens up in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Arsenal would be in the queue. So would clubs from abroad.

For now, though, the door is bolted.

Liverpool see one of the best young left-sided talents in Europe in their own dressing room, and they are acting like it. The champions wanted a winger. They may have to accept that the one they covet most is staying exactly where he is.
