Logan Dobbs: Gillingham’s Surprise Package and Breakout Star

Gareth Ainsworth did not try to dress it up. Logan Dobbs has caught him off guard.

The 19-year-old defender has forced his way into Gillingham’s plans and refused to step aside, starting every game of the season so far. On Saturday, he added a new line to his story – his first senior goal, a towering header that set the Gills on their way to a 2-0 win over Tranmere.

Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, Ainsworth called Dobbs “a surprise package” and made it clear this wasn’t some pre-planned rise. Circumstance cracked the door open. Dobbs kicked it down.

“With the loss of Liam [Gordon, to injury] in the first game and Sam Gale's move to Barnsley, all of a sudden the door opened and Logan's been sensational,” Ainsworth said.

That honesty ran through his assessment. The manager admitted he did not initially see this level coming from the teenager, who has quickly become a mainstay.

“I think he will understand when I say I didn't know he was capable of – he's done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here.”

The moment that sealed his emergence came in front of his own people. Dobbs rose, scored, and the reaction from the stands told its own story. Supporters broke into chants of “he’s one of our own”, a soundtrack Ainsworth clearly relished.

“Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own, so when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that's what dreams are made of,” he said.

Gillingham sit 11th in League Two, a club searching for momentum in a congested table. Next up is a serious examination: second-placed Bristol Rovers visit on Saturday.

Dobbs has already answered one question this season. The next is whether this “surprise package” can help drive Gillingham into the promotion conversation.
