Maine Black Bears Secure Statement Draw Against Providence Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maine walked out of Chapey Field with more than a draw. It left with a statement.

The Black Bears, long on the wrong side of this matchup, ground out a 1-1 tie against Providence College on Thursday night at Anderson Stadium, snapping a long run of frustration both in the series and against Big East opposition.

Meadows strikes on the stroke of halftime

For 44 minutes, Maine absorbed pressure, bent in moments, but never broke. Then it pounced.

With the final minute of the first half ticking away, Victoria Dungey took control near midfield. She spun through two Friars defenders, carved out a lane, and threaded a ball straight up the gut for a sprinting Isabella Meadows.

Meadows didn’t hesitate. She tore into the open space, carried the pass into the box and slid her finish inside the right post with 37 seconds left in the half. One pass, one touch, one ruthless moment. Maine went into the break 1-0 up and suddenly in command.

The goal was Meadows’ second of the season, and another reminder of her timing in big moments. For Dungey, it was assist number two on the year, fittingly coming in her 60th career appearance for the program.

Providence finally breaks through

Providence had the ball and the numbers for long stretches. It also had to live with frustration.

The Friars outshot Maine on frame, 6-4, and held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Every time they found a seam, though, Elena Barenberg met them. The Maine goalkeeper turned away five efforts, keeping the Black Bears’ lead intact as the clock wound down.

The pressure finally told in the closing minutes.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Providence thought it had its equalizer only to see the flag go up. For a moment, Maine could breathe. That moment didn’t last. After a review, the goal was overturned and allowed to stand, dragging the Friars level at 1-1 and resetting the night.

From there, it became a test of nerve. Maine, stung but not shaken, saw out the final minutes to secure the draw.

Milestones in a grinding result

The box score will show a tie. Inside the Maine camp, it will feel like a marker laid down.

Barenberg’s five saves anchored a defensive effort that leaned heavily on experience. Luise Reinwald joined Dungey in reaching 60 career games, while Meghan Bernetti made her 50th career start. Bernetti and Olivia Grisdale went the distance, playing all 90 minutes in a match that demanded concentration from the first whistle to the last.

The numbers tell the history: Maine is now 2-11-1 all-time against Providence. Yet this 1-1 draw carries extra weight. It’s the Black Bears’ first result against a Big East opponent since a tie with St. John’s back in 2007.

On the season, Maine moves to 2-3-2. Providence remains unbeaten at 2-0-6.
