Manchester United Returns to Champions League Action

Three years away felt like an eternity. On Thursday night, Manchester United finally walk back out under the Champions League lights at Old Trafford, opening their campaign against Azerbaijani underdogs Sabah FK.

Michael Carrick is the man who dragged them back. The former United midfielder, handed the job permanently after steering his old club to third in the Premier League last season, now leads them into Europe as a fully-fledged manager, not just a caretaker with a feel-good bounce. This is his team, his project, his first crack at the continent’s elite.

The expectation is simple: United are heavy favourites. The reality is trickier. Carrick has decisions to make, and an injury list that won’t quite leave him alone.

Carrick’s Fitness Puzzle

The big boost could come in midfield. Mason Mount has been back in full training and is pushing to be involved after missing the start of the season. Carrick won’t rush him, but the sight of the England international back with the group offers timely relief in a department already stretched.

At the back, there is cautious optimism around Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch centre-half is in the final stages of his recovery from a long-term back problem, edging closer to a return. This one might still come too soon for a start, yet his presence around the squad again is significant.

Luke Shaw is the major concern. The left-back was managed carefully after the 2-2 draw at Everton, with Carrick admitting the defender’s workload is being monitored. Shaw’s importance was underlined at the Hill Dickenson Stadium, where he supplied the cross for Benjamin Sesko’s goal. His availability, or lack of it, could reshape the entire back line.

Sesko himself is almost there. The Slovenian striker, whose shin issue curtailed the end of last season, is close to full fitness. Carrick has hinted he is ready to push for a start. If he gets the nod, it could have big implications for the forward line.

Not everyone is so close. Amad Diallo is expected to be sidelined until October with an ankle problem. New signing Carlos Baleba, brought in from Brighton and Hove Albion, is on a similar timeline as he works his way back from injury. Manuel Ugarte is also out, thinning Carrick’s options in the centre of the pitch.

Defensive Jigsaw at Old Trafford

One position is locked in. Senne Lammens will start in goal, the Belgian set to make his Champions League bow in front of the Stretford End.

The full-back slots are far less clear. On the right, it’s a straight shootout between Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot. Both are trusted, both offer energy and attacking thrust. If Shaw does not make it, one of them could be asked to switch flanks and cover at left-back.

That scenario would open the door for youngster Harry Amass. The highly rated defender stayed at Old Trafford despite late transfer interest and has been impressing behind the scenes. A place in the starting XI might be a stretch, but a European night at home is exactly the kind of stage where Carrick could reward his progress.

In central defence, De Ligt’s uncertainty keeps the door open. At Everton, Harry Maguire partnered Lisandro Martinez, a pairing that had already seen minutes together in pre-season. Before that, Maguire had spent much of the summer alongside Ayden Heaven, another academy product who has pushed his way into the conversation.

Heaven could come back into the side here, especially if Carrick wants to rotate and manage Martinez’s minutes. Leny Yoro is also in the frame, adding another layer of competition and another decision for the manager.

Midfield Balance and Big-Name Competition

Even with the absences, Carrick has quality in midfield. Mount’s return eases the blow of losing Baleba and Ugarte, but the recent partnership at the base of the 4-2-3-1 has been clear: Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo.

Tielemans brings control and passing range, Mainoo the energy and intelligence that have quickly made him a fan favourite. That pairing has anchored United’s play in recent weeks and could well continue here, especially in a game where United are expected to dominate the ball.

There is, however, a £48m question. Andrey Santos, the big-money arrival from Chelsea, is itching for a start. Carrick has eased him in, yet a home tie against perceived weaker opposition is exactly the sort of fixture where managers often roll the dice and give new signings a platform. Whether Santos breaks up the Tielemans–Mainoo axis or has to wait a little longer will say plenty about his standing in the pecking order.

Attack Loaded with Options

Further forward, the shape feels familiar. Bruno Fernandes will operate in his preferred No.10 role, the creative hub and pressing trigger between the lines.

To his right, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to start. The summer signing offers pace, direct running and a goal threat cutting in from the flank, giving United a different profile to the wide men of recent years.

The real intrigue is on the left and through the middle. If Sesko is deemed ready to start up front, Marcus Rashford could be handed a breather. That scenario would likely see Matheus Cunha moved out to the left, a role he can play with his work rate and ability to drift inside, leaving Sesko to lead the line.

If Carrick opts for caution with Sesko, Rashford may stay central, with Cunha continuing in support and Mbeumo providing width. Either way, United will not be short of firepower.
