Manchester United Face Injury Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash

Manchester United will go into their Old Trafford opener patched up and under pressure, with Michael Carrick missing at least nine players for Sunday’s clash against Ipswich Town.

The 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend has already darkened the mood around United’s season, and Carrick knows he needs a response. The performance at the MKM Stadium raised old questions: soft in midfield, blunt in attack, short of control. Now he has to fix it without a sizeable chunk of his squad.

Big-money signing made to wait

Since that loss, United have completed a £70million move for Carlos Baleba from Brighton, a statement signing intended to stiffen the heart of Carrick’s side. The fanfare will have to wait.

Baleba picked up an ankle problem in pre-season and won’t be rushed in. Carrick made it clear the new arrival is still a couple of weeks away.

"He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks. We knew that before. It's no major issue. It'll be great to have him back," the United boss said.

For a team already searching for rhythm, the delay is a frustration. Baleba has been brought in to change the feel of United’s midfield. For now, he can only watch.

Amad and Mount: one out, one edging back

Out wide, there is more bad news. Amad remains unavailable after a minor training-ground injury, having already missed the Hull defeat.

Carrick was blunt when asked about the £37m winger’s status.

"Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer," he confirmed.

On the other side of the fitness spectrum, Mason Mount offers a sliver of encouragement. The midfielder will not feature against Ipswich but has stepped back onto the grass with the group.

"Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive," Carrick said, hinting that Mount is closing in on a competitive return, even if this weekend comes too soon.

De Ligt close, but not quite there

At the back, Matthijs De Ligt is another name still missing from the teamsheet but creeping closer to a comeback after a long lay-off.

"Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time," Carrick said of the Dutch defender. "But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back."

United have badly needed stability in central defence. De Ligt’s return to full fitness could reshape the back line, but like Baleba, his impact remains a promise rather than a reality.

Heaton joins growing absentee list

Even in goal, Carrick is short of options. Veteran reserve goalkeeper Tom Heaton will also miss out after suffering an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG. There is no clear timeframe yet on when he will be available again.

Heaton would not have started, but his absence strips away another layer of experience from the bench at a time when United’s squad depth is already under strain.

Ipswich travel with their own problems

Ipswich arrive with momentum after their win over Sunderland, but Kieran McKenna’s side are not at full strength either.

  • Jaden Philogene, who missed the victory over the Black Cats with an ankle injury, remains out.
  • Florentino Luis is still sidelined by a calf problem, having also sat out the Sunderland game.
  • Azor Matusiwa, absent last week with a thigh issue, is again unavailable.

Four absentees for the visitors, nine for United. Both managers will have to juggle, but the weight of expectation sits squarely on Carrick’s shoulders.

Old Trafford will not be in a forgiving mood if United stumble again. With key signings in the stands and senior players on the treatment table, can this depleted side finally ignite their season, or is the pressure only just beginning to build?
