Manchester United vs Ipswich: Mount Returns and Carrick's Key Decisions
Old Trafford expects a reaction.
Manchester United return home on Sunday still nursing the bruise of an opening-day defeat at Hull, a flat 2-0 loss that raised more questions than answers about Michael Carrick’s new-look side. The performance lacked pace, incision and any real menace in the final third. Ipswich arrive next, and already this feels like a game United cannot afford to drift through.
Mount’s Timely Return
Carrick at least has one significant boost. Mason Mount is back in the squad after returning to full training this week, his ankle injury from the Paris Saint-Germain friendly finally behind him.
He is unlikely to be rushed straight into the starting XI, but his presence changes the mood. A team that looked short of ideas and creativity at Hull suddenly has another high-level option between the lines, another player who can quicken the tempo and punch passes through tight spaces.
Crucially, Carrick came through the Hull defeat without any new injuries. After a disjointed pre-season, simply having continuity matters. Mount is the headline return, but he is not the only attacking weapon now pushing hard.
Rashford Ready to Start
Marcus Rashford is driving for a recall after only making the bench on opening weekend. Given how blunt United looked, that feels like a straightforward decision. They badly missed his speed, his willingness to run in behind and his ability to stretch a back line.
If Rashford comes in, Patrick Dorgu is the likely casualty. That would leave Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha, with Rashford offering the vertical threat from the left.
Up front, Benjamin Sesko is still building back after a shin issue, so Cunha is expected to lead the line again. He worked hard at Hull but rarely received the kind of service a central striker needs. With Rashford and potentially Mount around him, that picture could change quickly.
Midfield Under the Microscope
The real debate sits in midfield.
Kobbie Mainoo is pushing hard for a start after watching Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos struggle to control the game at Hull. United’s midfield lacked bite, rhythm and any real grip on proceedings. Carrick knows that cannot continue.
The likely adjustment is simple but significant: Mainoo alongside Tielemans, with Fernandes released higher up the pitch. That shape gives United more intensity in the middle and allows their captain to roam into dangerous pockets rather than spending long spells helping build from deep.
At the back, Carrick’s room to experiment is limited. Injuries still narrow his choices and make sweeping changes unlikely, even after a poor defensive showing on the road.
Baleba Delayed, Others Still Out
One of the summer’s marquee arrivals will have to wait. New £70 million midfielder Carlos Baleba will not make his debut yet, still sidelined by the ankle ligament injury he picked up with Brighton during a pre-season camp in Austria. The expectation is that he remains out for “two or three weeks”.
Amad Diallo is also missing for “a little bit longer”, while Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are not ready to return. Carrick’s core remains stretched, even as the season barely gets going.
Predicted XI and the Stakes
Given the fitness picture and the need for a sharper, more assertive display, Carrick’s XI could look like this:
Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.
Kick-off is at 4.30pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, under the Old Trafford glare.
United don’t just need a win. They need a performance that shows Hull was a stumble, not a sign of what this season will become.
