Manchester United vs Manchester City: Derby Day Showdown at Old Trafford

Manchester United go into this afternoon’s derby at Old Trafford knowing exactly what is at stake. Beat Manchester City, and their Premier League season suddenly looks very different.

Michael Carrick has not been afraid to shake things up. He rang the changes for Thursday’s 4-0 Champions League rout of Sabah, rotating heavily and resting several key names. Today, the big guns are back.

Defence reshaped for the derby

Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal after a comfortable night against the Azerbaijani side.

In front of him, the back four has a more familiar feel. Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire both return to the starting XI, flanking Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu. Martinez and Dorgu played most of the 90 minutes in midweek but keep their spots, rewarded for solid showings.

Nous Mazraoui and Leny Yoro drop to the bench. Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from back surgery, leaving Carrick with limited room for manoeuvre at centre-back.

The notable absentee is Luke Shaw. Rested on Thursday, he is the only one of the rotated quartet not recalled, with rumours of an injury now effectively confirmed by his omission.

Mainoo and Tielemans trusted again

Carrick sticks with the same midfield axis that controlled proceedings in Europe. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans line up together again in the double pivot, tasked with screening City’s threat and launching United’s own counters.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes keeps his place in the No 10 role, the creative hub between the lines.

Out wide, there is a significant boost. Marcus Rashford returns to the left wing, a key outlet on the break and a player whose record in big games continues to buy him trust. On the opposite flank, Bryan Mbeumo starts on the right, with Amad still working his way back from a hamstring injury.

Through the middle, Matheus Cunha once more leads the line as a false nine. His movement and link play have clearly convinced Carrick, even at the expense of an in-form goalscorer: Ben Sesko, who has found the net in his last two games, drops to the bench.

Karl Darlow is named as the substitute goalkeeper.

He is joined on the bench by Nous Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Shea Lacey, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Josh Zirkzee and Ben Sesko.
