Manchester United Prepares for Leeds in Dublin with Strong XI

Manchester United step into Croke Park tonight with the Premier League season suddenly right in front of them. Two friendlies left, Hull City away on August 22 looming, and Michael Carrick now shifting from experimentation to sharpening.

This is no gentle run-out either. Leeds always bring an edge, even in pre-season, and United’s head coach is expected to lean heavily on his senior players in Dublin.

Lammens set for first start of the summer

In goal, Senne Lammens is in line for his first start of the summer after illness ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain. His recovery offers Carrick a timely chance to assess the Belgian properly before competitive football returns.

At right-back, Noussair Mazraoui started against PSG, but this one could belong to Diogo Dalot. Carrick is keen to spread the minutes and Dalot, who needs rhythm, looks a strong candidate to come in.

Ayden Heaven struggled on Saturday, and that performance may cost him here. Leny Yoro is pushing hard and could be drafted in alongside Harry Maguire, a pairing that would give United a more settled feel at the heart of defence.

Midfield puzzle after Mount scare

The midfield has been one of United’s bright spots this summer. Andrey Santos and Mason Mount have built a sharp, complementary partnership, mixing control with energy.

But Mount’s early withdrawal in Gothenburg has changed the picture. He was taken off midway through the first half and, even with both player and manager insisting it was only precautionary, there is little sense in taking risks in August.

That opens the door for Youri Tielemans. The Belgian is still waiting for his first start of the summer and this looks an ideal moment to pair him with Santos, giving Carrick another look at a potential Premier League combination.

Bruno Fernandes, who finally saw his first minutes of pre-season at the weekend, is expected to step in at No.10. That would mean Shea Lacey drops out of the starting XI, but not out of the picture. Inside the club, there is a clear expectation that Lacey will feature more regularly with the first team over the coming months.

Rashford back, but likely from the bench

Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad in Dublin, his situation one of the subplots of United’s summer. His future is still uncertain, yet he has been reintegrated into the group this week and his presence alone changes the feel of the tour.

Even so, a starting role tonight looks unlikely. The same goes for Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both of whom only recently returned from World Cup duty and are being eased back into action.

On the right, Amad did enough against PSG to strengthen his claim. Direct, lively, and dangerous, he made his case and should keep his place.

The left flank remains more fluid. Patrick Dorgu has been learning the role and Carrick may decide to keep that education going with another start. But if Matheus Cunha has fully shaken off the illness that sidelined him at the weekend, he becomes a genuine alternative.

Mbeumo leads the line while Sesko waits

Up front, Carrick’s ideal scenario is clear: Benjamin Sesko fit, firing, and leading the line. Reality is different. Sesko has not played since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season, and until he is fully ready, United must look elsewhere.

Bryan Mbeumo has seized that opportunity. One of the standout performers of United’s pre-season, he has carried threat, intelligence, and consistency. Right now, picking him as the central striker feels close to automatic.

Carrick will not say it publicly, but nights like this in Dublin matter. Leeds, a big crowd at Croke Park, the season almost here. This is where a pre-season tour stops being a series of trials and starts to look like the real thing.
