Manchester United U19s 5–0 Sabah FK: Gabriel Shines with Hat-Trick

Manchester United’s youngsters launched their UEFA Youth League campaign with a ruthless 5–0 dismantling of Sabah FK at Leigh Sports Village, a performance as dominant as the scoreline suggests – and then some.

This competition shadows the senior side’s Champions League group stage, but there was nothing second-string about the intent on show. With the club’s U21s boss stepping in to lead a makeshift U19 group, United set the tone within seconds and never let up.

Lightning start

Barely two minutes had passed when United were in front. Jim Thwaites whipped in a teasing free-kick from wide on the right, and Amir Ibragimov darted to the near post to turn it home. Simple, sharp, and a clear warning of what was to come.

Sabah barely had time to reset before JJ Gabriel almost doubled the lead. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he thumped a rising drive that forced the goalkeeper into a strong fingertip save over the bar.

United hemmed the visitors into their own half, dictating the tempo and territory. Sabah’s only relief came through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who tried to break out on the counter with long, driving bursts from deep. Each time, though, he was isolated and outnumbered, swallowed up by red shirts before he could trouble the defence.

The pressure finally told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato swung in a cross from the right that skidded across the box and reached Jacob Watson. On his weaker right foot, the defender stayed composed and drilled his finish into the net to make it 2–0.

United’s only early setback came four minutes later. In his first start of the season, Godwill Kukonki rolled his ankle and could not continue, forcing an early change as Rafe McCormack entered the fray. The disruption barely affected the rhythm.

On the stroke of half-time, the hosts added a third. Junior Brown’s effort inside the area was blocked, but the loose ball dropped kindly for Gabriel. He reacted quickest, pouncing to sweep his shot into the net and send United in with a commanding 3–0 lead.

Relentless dominance

The second half brought no mercy for Sabah. United continued to swarm forward, pinning their opponents deep and treating the game like a training-ground exercise in chance creation.

Brown almost produced the goal of the afternoon when he cut in from the left and bent a superb effort towards the top-right corner. The technique was perfect; only an outstanding save denied him.

Despite wave after wave of attacks, the fourth goal took its time. When it arrived, it was worth the wait. Late in the half, Gabriel collected the ball in the box, shimmied past his marker with a neat sidestep and passed his finish into the far-right corner. Clinical, composed, 4–0.

United were not done. Thwaites, already with an assist to his name, then split the Sabah defence with a brilliant through ball, threading Gabriel in behind the backline. The forward raced clear and, with all the confidence of a man in form, completed his hat-trick to seal a 5–0 rout.

The numbers behind the scoreline were staggering. United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah did not manage a single effort at Cameron Byrne-Hughes’ end.

If this was a marker for the Youth League campaign ahead, the young Red Devils have announced themselves in emphatic style.
