Marshall Soccer Overcomes VCU 3-1 in Comeback Victory

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, then owned the night.

Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat VCU 3-1 on Sunday at Hoops Family Field, staying unbeaten at 2-0-2.

Early shock, early response

An edgy opening turned costly when Marshall misplayed it at the back and VCU pounced. Ty Johnson slipped in alone, lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped into an empty net to stun the home crowd and hand the Rams a 1-0 lead.

With a roster still learning each other’s movements, Marshall looked disjointed in the early exchanges. Head coach Chris Grassie pointed straight at that growing process, stressing how the team’s passing and movement double as its language on the pitch and that, right now, it still swings between “pure clarity” and “confusion” as the new group tries to fully connect.

The response came from distance — and with venom.

Eight minutes after conceding, Goncalo Machado laid the ball off to Thiago Apolinario, who didn’t hesitate. From nearly 40 yards, Apolinario unleashed a drive that caught VCU keeper Manuel Monteiro off guard. His third goal of the season ripped Marshall level at 1-1 and jolted the Herd into life.

Obert steadies the Herd

VCU refused to fade after the equalizer. The Rams carved out chances and carried a real threat through the rest of the first half.

Obert, though, held the line.

His key stop in the 31st minute kept the match tied and allowed Marshall to reach the break on even terms, a small but vital platform after a shaky start.

Second-half surge

Marshall came out of halftime sharper, quicker, and far more ruthless.

Just before the 50-minute mark, the pressure broke VCU. A loose ball fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He stepped onto the deflection and drilled his finish past Monteiro, flipping the game on its head and putting the Herd 2-1 in front.

From there, Marshall played with the authority of a ranked side protecting a lead at home. When VCU did find cracks, Obert closed them again, producing two more big saves in the 59th and 85th minutes to preserve the one-goal cushion.

Romberg slams the door

VCU’s final mistake proved fatal.

In the 90th minute, a Rams error at the back left Carl Romberg clean through. He didn’t waste the gift, slotting home Marshall’s third to seal the comeback and send the home fans into full voice.

From 0-1 down to a 3-1 win, Marshall showed both its flaws and its ceiling — a team still gelling, still ironing out its communication, but already finding ways to win.
