Mason Mount's Return Boosts Manchester United as Carrick Faces Injury Challenges
Manchester United’s season is only a week old, and already Michael Carrick is juggling problems. A bruising 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend has left Old Trafford restless, and another newly promoted opponent, Ipswich Town, arrives on Sunday.
This time, at least, there is a hint of good news.
Carrick’s mixed injury bulletin
In his pre-match press conference, Carrick confirmed that Amad Diallo faces a spell on the sidelines, a blow to United’s attacking depth. Carlos Baleba, signed to strengthen midfield, is still not fully over the injury he picked up earlier in the summer.
Those two updates alone would have darkened the mood.
Then came Mason Mount.
The midfielder, who injured himself in the friendly against Paris Saint-Germain on August 8, has stepped back into the picture. Carrick revealed the 27-year-old has rejoined the squad in training.
“Mase is back around the group. He trained this week, so a real positive,” the 45-year-old said, via the Manchester Evening News.
Carrick stopped short of guaranteeing Mount a place in the squad against Ipswich, but the implication was clear: Mount has a real chance of being involved at Old Trafford. A starting role might be a step too far after weeks out, yet a place on the bench and a second-half cameo are firmly on the table if the game demands it.
Why Mount matters so much to this United
Before the setback against PSG, Mount had been one of United’s sharpest performers in pre-season. Across the first three friendlies he looked lively, and his display in the win over Atletico Madrid drew particular praise for its edge and intensity.
Known primarily as an attacking midfielder, Mount dropped into a deeper role in the summer, operating alongside Andrey Santos. The pair struck up a quick understanding, moving the ball with tempo and giving Carrick a different kind of balance in the middle of the pitch.
At one stage, that form even nudged United’s transfer thinking. There was talk that, instead of pushing hard for a third midfielder, the club could lean on Mount’s versatility and intelligence in the double pivot.
The landscape has shifted since then. Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo have arrived to compete for those deeper roles, adding fresh legs and fresh ideas. But their competitive debut at Hull was one to forget, with both the Belgian and Santos struggling as United were turned over.
That performance has opened a door.
If the new signings continue to labour, Carrick has a ready-made alternative. Mount, once fully fit, offers pressing from the front of midfield, a clean passing range, and the discipline to sit deeper when required. He can knit United’s play together or tilt the game higher up the pitch, depending on how Carrick wants to attack it.
For a manager under early scrutiny and a team already searching for rhythm, the return of a player who understands both roles could be more than just a fitness boost. It might be the tactical lever that decides how quickly United’s season gets back on track.
