Max Dowman call-up: Tuchel considers Arsenal prodigy for England

Thomas Tuchel is seriously considering fast‑tracking Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior set-up as a mounting injury list threatens to reshape his Nations League plans.

The 16-year-old, already with England’s Under-19s at St George’s Park, is under active consideration for a promotion to train with Harry Kane and the senior squad ahead of a demanding four-game block against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

He would barely need to move dressing rooms. The opportunity has opened up because of a brutal run of withdrawals: Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the upcoming international window with fitness issues.

A teenager on the fast track

Dowman is currently scheduled to feature for England’s Under-19s against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, September 25. Tuchel is weighing up whether to bring him across to work at close quarters with the senior group before England open their Nations League campaign.

For Dowman, it would be another sharp step in a rise that has already felt accelerated.

The Arsenal midfielder tore up the record books in March, scoring against Everton at the Emirates Stadium to become the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days. That moment turned him from academy buzzword into a name known across the division.

He has not drifted out of view since. Earlier this month he struck twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, underlining why he is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in English football.

Dowman did not make the cut for England’s 2026 World Cup squad, but his form at club level has kept him firmly on the radar for Tuchel’s long-term plans. There has been talk of a loan move to secure more minutes, yet The Sporting News understands Arsenal are more likely to keep him in-house this season.

A stint with the senior national team, even just in training, would add another layer to that development.

Tuchel’s plans hit by withdrawals

Tuchel’s early work with England has been complicated by the loss of several key figures.

Arsenal’s midfield anchor Rice has stepped away amid concerns over his workload and fitness. Chelsea creator Palmer, who only recently forced his way back into the national picture after missing the World Cup, is sidelined by a minor injury.

From Manchester United, both Rashford and Mainoo are unavailable because of injury problems, while Newcastle full-back Livramento completes a list of five absentees that has forced a rethink.

The Football Association moved quickly on Monday, confirming that Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted in as replacements. Their inclusion gives Tuchel fresh cover, but the possibility of Dowman joining the group would allow him to run the rule over another emerging option with Euro 2028 on the horizon.

The door is already open to youth. Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha was named in the original senior squad announced on September 18, a clear signal that age is no barrier if the talent is there.

A brutal Nations League schedule

There is no gentle easing-in period.

England launch their 2026-27 Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a fixture that will test Tuchel’s reshaped midfield from the first whistle.

They then head to Prague to face Czechia on September 29 before travelling to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3. The window closes with a return clash against Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.
